Detroit Driving Tips??

Hey,

I've just moved here from the west coast, and man are the roads here shitty! Anybody got any tips on driving here through all the seasons, certain areas to avoid, or tips on driving/spotting/avoiding potholes?

Am about to upgrade to a set of 20"s for my 4GC, so it would be helpful to know something before I make the swap!

Thanks all in advance!

I would skip 20's. 19"s are PLENTY big for the car and the area. Unless you are going forged, you're just adding unsprung weight.

The roads here are in terrible shape. Even the nicer areas which have some curvy roads are littered with potholes and cracks. I have rocked my F30 on 18" OEM BMW wheels, 19" VMR wheels on 235/35 tires, and 19" Apex on 245/40 tires lowered suspension. Couple of tips from my experience so far:
1) Don't get 20s. Besides looking oversized on these cars, they will be destroyed on the roads here or will destroy your back with the terrible ride quality and limited sidewall protection. Not to mention 20" wheels being heavy.
2) Get 19" rims and a good tire size (40 or 45 profile). If you have DHP, good. If you don't, don't go lower than Dinan suspension. Your back and car will thank me later.
3) Be aware of the roads. Learn to duck potholes. I75 is terrible, avoid at all costs. I94 is marginal (destroyed 2 VMRs going to chicago) I696 and I96 are better.
4) Be prepared to spend extra on tires, wheels due to the inevitably of damaging them.
5) try to get forged or at least semi-forged wheels. seem to be stronger.
