Aftermarket Parts + Warranty (Timing Chain Worries) on 2014 F32
Hey everyone,
I've been lurking this place for quite a bit and had an itch to add bunch of aftermarket parts to my F32... (428i XDrive 2014 N26; Manufactured in Oct 2013) My main worry is BMW honoring the timing chain / timing chain guide if/when it goes wrong. I haven't seen any posts about N26 engines on a 4 series going wrong... but it's still an N20/N26 and I'm fairly paranoid about the issue. I checked timing guide and it is indeed the older timing chain guide (the orange/caramel color one; I believe the new ones are white). Here are the parts I'm planning to add: 1. CSF Intercooler 2. AWE Exhaust + Midpipe 3. Mishimoto Baffled Oil Catch Can 4. JB4 Tuner Stage 2* 5. ER Catted Downpipe* 6. Injen Cold Air Intake* Others include aftermarket anti-roll bar , engine strut bar, lowering springs, new wheels, and m-sport bumpers + side skirts (I basically regretted not getting the M-Sport stock or even just a 435i but whatever... live and learn) From what I searched, it seems like #4,5, and 6 would likely cause the dealer to not touch the car... would the other parts cause that as well? I know any of these can cause the dealer to do this as well but I'm just trying to get a feel for this. Or... if I should just say f*** it and do it all because the timing chain issue is overblown / false paranoia? I don't drive much at all (think less than 5000 miles a year) Thanks everyone. |

If something does go wrong you could replace the parts with stock before taking it to the dealer...

I would but I'm getting most of these done at a shop as I don't want to screw anything up. The ECU I believe also leave traces behind; and from these issues (timing chain) the car needs to be towed... I don't think I'll be pulled over on side of the road to replace the intake before towing... The Downpipe... forget it lol

the jb4 can be install/remove in 5 min
intake can be done less than 30min i wouldnt install downpipe because that requires going under the car. but can be done in less than an hour if wanted to install/remove |

Well, do some research and see when the timing chain guide was redesigned.. You may not have the issue on your engine. Check the production date of your car and compare to the redesign date.
I have a N26, with the old design and 85k miles. No issues with the TC yet. I also have my AS/S coded out, so that helps out. I heard the issue is accelerated by that.

Auto Stop/Start. The increase in starting/stopping the engine accelerates wear.

+1 on the catch can. Have a BMS one installed and dealer has never mentioned it.
In my opinion, a no brainer first mod that has zero potential to harm your vehicle... only can help the valves stay cleaner and performance maintained long term. |
