RWD vs AWD
Can you guys please lay out a few pros and cons about RWD and AWD f30 335?
i know awd is more reliable especially in the snow and stuff and also its faster? does anyone know by how much? and in rwd you can drift? more sporty i guess? also, there is a difference in speed if the car is rolling vs a dead stop correct? awd would be faster at a deadstop i read but rwd would be fasting if it was rolling? would that change which is faster 0-60 |

Get a RWD car and a good set of snow tires. That is the best performance and a safer play than AWD without snow tires. There is no shortcut. The technology isn't good. You need dedicated snow tires. |

RWD gets my vote.. BMW's AWD system is pretty good and, yea, gets the car from 0 to 60 faster than RWD, but when you really push the RWD it feels 100x better than AWD (well maybe only 97X). Also, people should remember that the transfer case should be serviced at least every 30K-40K (despite what BMW says). At only 50K, the transfer case in my 328i was toast and had all but maybe 1 oz of metal(ly) oil in the case.

Other than gasoline grade/octane and oil type/brand, the awd/rwd debate is probably the 3rd most-discussed topic. Or maybe 1st or 2nd on any given day. We're all tired of it.

Get RWD and a nice set of winter tires for the winter, problem solved.
Yes you can go drifting in RWD but I highly doubt you'll be driving around and doing that. |

Oh great, another one of these! If you can afford to not make it to work, get RWD. If you must be at work at all costs, AWD+Snow tires.
You don't need much more information. RWD is more than adequate for almost every situation. It is better balanced, better suspension, cheaper, etc. |

I went for AWD because for me, the handling is better than RWD on my 3.0L F31. My preference is for 'neutral' handling - neither oversteer nor understeer, and this is what AWD gives me. Some people regard it as boring - that's up to them. The winter thing is useful but it's not the key factor for me. For me 'sporty' is a Lotus Elise or a Caterham, or a McLaren or Lambo (if I could afford the latter two).

If you have snow then i would go awd; its faster than the rwd where it counts in the daily drive and very very solid in ice snow and low traction situations with the stock all seasons. |

DO NOT GET AWD! I'm on my 5th BMW and only got XDrive because the dealer didn't have any RWD on hand and the residuals and lease rates on RWD were stupid high since they have no interest in leasing them up here. It is NOT the same feeling. Sure it will be better the 4-5 times you'll need it in the snow during winter but aside from that RWD just drives better. Unless you're living on the top of a mountain in Norway there is no real need for it. NEVER AGAIN!! And if they continue down this path of strong arm Xdrive sales they will lose me as a customer.

Me: I would like the Pad-Kee-Mao, spice level 8, with white chicken and tofu. Employee: Sir, white chicken is an extra $2.00. Is that okay with you? Me: OMG. Why are you strong arming me to order dark chicken. I'll never eat in this establishment again. |

If I was getting an Audi I would get the Quattro for sure. But with the F30, I would stick with the RWD. Main reason is, the xdrive models get a very soft suspension even if you get the msport package - to the point that the "BMW feeling" is not there when driving the car, throwing it around corners and having fun. If I needed AWD that badly, I would get Audi or Subaru instead.
