What was your first ride
Hey everyone. Happy New Years just wanted to start a new thread because I'm turning 16 in a few days. Just post your first car what year it was and how old you where when you got it

I was lucky enough to get a new Hummer H2 back when I got my license... parents were insistent that I drove to school in a tank (literally!) for my safety. Glad to be a BMW driver now!

A '70 Ford Pinto. A real P.O.S. Everybody should drive a $50 beater for their first car. It makes you appreciate the better things to come.
Although, my best friend, a real go-getter even back then, bought a '66 TBird when he was 14 years old and drove it up and down his driveway until he turned 16. THAT is the best "First car" story I've yet heard. The guy eventually rigged his wiper washer to run inside the car and deliver a shot of whiskey. Ah, the good times we had in that car. |

White 1967 Buick Skylark Gran Sport 340. What a beast but was crazy fast. Cost me $50 and cut the owners lawn for the summer.

1992 Ford Aerostar...I was thankful my parents let me drive anything!
Later got a 1998 Ford Contour SVT-that's when the performance itch started.

First ride at Age 19 which was in 1970 was a 1970 Mazda 1200. It was a demo and was white with black GT stripes up the hood over the roof and down the trunk. I called it the skunk. It had a four speed and wasn't very quick but too me it was a sports car. Lots of spin outs for me but no accidents. First car that I really really liked was a 1970 MGB that I bought used a couple of years later.

Not quite... I had a '78 Accord hatchback that I bought from my neighbor for $700 in 1986. At some point in its history, somebody had used it as the trailer car behind their RV and driven it through plenty of snowy winters. The car was rusted within an inch of its life and then somebody else had the audacity to give it an authentic Earl Scheib paint job... in turquoise . Oh, did I mention they painted OVER the rust?
Cosmetic issues aside, the car was indestructible. After a minor tuneup, it ran like a champ and because Honda's CVCC system ran so clean, it had no cat and ran on LEADED gasoline! It used to cost only $7 to fill the tank. |

1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for $500. Spent another $350 to make it a 12 second car...Terrible except in a straight line and when it wasn't raining

1972 Formula Firebird, bought in 1978 when I was in high school. It was in a barn in Mason City Iowa.
455 Super Duty motor (dry sump). Since I was in Auto Mech school at the time, and had access to lots of tools and no place else to spend my money, Balanced, bored, stroked, Blueprinted, crossover intake, 2 Holley 4 bbl carbs, high lift competition cam over 550 HP. 4 Speed Hurst Transmission, heavy duty clutch and rebuilt differential with traction bars. Sold it for 3X what I bought it for in 1982 to pay for college. I miss the car but it was a good trade. I see really clean samples today sell for over 6 figures.

Purchased my 1987 Honda CRX when I was 18. Loved the MPG in that car. LA to San Diego on 1/4 tank! 51.8 MPG was the best I ever got out of it.
CRX is hard to find now, everyone has done motor swaps on them. Great little car tho. |
