I have approx. 1500 miles on my 335i 6sp MT and have been averaging just a shade over 20 mpg, mostly stop and go city driving in sport mode with ASS off.

40 mpg in city roads (not 23 as BMW claims)
Had to go to a friend's house in the night and had to travel about 9 miles (no freeways). It was a 15 minute trip. Encountered about 18 traffic signals out of which I had to stop at about 7 of them. What do you think?

Those are some awesome city roads if you can average 40.1mph. I can't even average 25mph over a week of driving my "50% city 50% highway" commute. And having a warm engine helps -- the real punishment for short city trips is those first 10 minutes of driving when the MPG counter is stuck at 10mpg

Sweet! I'd expect the 335i and AH3 to be very similar in fuel economy on the highway since the hybrid assist really only helps out under 50mph. It's nice to see that having a couple hundred extra pounds didn't end up hurting me on the highway.

Just did a 175 mile round trip VC to OC and back to code some cars.
I got 41 mpg on the way down (no traffic), and 36 mpg on the way back (with several slow downs and traffic jams). All highway with an average speed of 58 mph. Comfort mode with the A/C on the whole way. |

110 miles from North County San Diego to Santa Monica LA (I-5 and 405) with moderate traffic (no traffic jams) I got 39 mpg. Same route, same conditions with my 2009 Audi 2.0T FWD I got 35 mpg.

How are ppl getting 40 mpg on the 335 during city driving? I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong - I can't barely average 31-32 mpg using eco pro during highway driving.

I'm not buying 40mpg for highway driving, for either 335i or 328i. Sure, if you get a nice open stretch for 50 miles where you can putter along at 60mph. But taking a real "trip", i.e. stop a few times, hit an on-ramp, slow for traffic on the highway, etc., then 40mpg is just not possible.

Car: 335i sport auto, 19" wheels, Bridgestone S001 sized 255 rear and 225 front.
Driving: 60% city, 40% highway. 80% comfort, 10% sport, 10% eco-pro. Mostly flat terrain. Never taken it above 4,000rmp (following BMW break-in rules), generally quite careful acceleration. About 700km total (435mi) on odo. Consumption (manual calculation) on Shell 91: 1st tank: 13.2 L/100km (17.8mpg) 2nd tank: 11.6 L/100km (20.3mpg) Given my current driving style, I'm a bit disappointed in the consumption. I know how optimistic manufacturer figures are, but BMW Canada puts the car at 7.7 L/100km (30.5mpg) combined. Compared to my latest 11.6 L/100km (20.3mpg), that is 50% above manufacturer figures. The 255 tires on the rear will lead to higher consumption, maybe more break-in is needed, but I still think consumption should be better. |
