"Read (VCM)" versus "READ (ECU)"

So I'm preparing my knowledge to code the car myself. I purchased a cable on Ebay and got an instruction from here http://www.bmwesys.com/guides/

In this guide they use E-Sys 3.26 and ESysLauncher 2.3.0

I also found another guide with E-Sys 3.27 and ESysLauncher 2.4.3

Both provides very clear steps, however the one on top tells me to use "READ (ECU)" and the one below uses "Read (VCM)".

I wonder what do they mean?

Thanks all

ECU - engine control unit
VCM - vehicle control module

Our man Knightsabers has put together a coding tutorial which you can find here.

I thought VCM was Vehicle Configuration Management.

ECU is electronic control unit. Each module we code in ESYS : DME, EGS, KOMBI, FEM_BODY, REM, etc are all considered to be ECUs. The engine ECU is the DME Digital Motor Electronics.
This confused me quite a bit at the start as well.
