Park distance control

Does this work for curbs in parking lots, or just with cars, as in parallel parking?

Doesn't usually pick up curbs, the sensors are too high for that. I don't have my F30 yet, so someone can correct me if its somehow different, but I've had it on numerous other cars and the sensors sit on the bumpers and point straight out, so too high for any normal curb.

Best thing for curbs is the cameras.

Your tilting passenger's exterior mirror is better. Best is to keep well clear of curbs in the first place. I scratched my E90's front passenger's wheel a bit hitting the curbs a few times and had to have it buffed smooth prior to selling it.

I park well clear of curbs in my F30.

I found this out the hard way... Misjudged parking spot and crunched my front wheel rim on my new baby. The parking assist didn't warn me and the camera wasn't on yet... I am hoping the wheel and tire protection will cover it.

Learning how to drive in NYC removes the need for parking distance control and cameras. Most parking is parallel and you learn how to park a $55k car real fast.

A problems with cameras is that drivers often spend too much time focusing on LCD and not enough looking outside through mirrors.

My father has it on his Lexus and I can tell you first hand that its got its advantages and disadvantages.

PDC is audible so it doesn't stop you from focusing where you should, the outside world.

That said, PDC likely wouldn't warn you of a pending curb hit.

I only got the PDC because I had to get it to get the rear camera.

Now that I have it, I find that the combination of PDC and the camera is really sweet and in a lot of cases, the PDC is more informational than the camera is to have.

Although it is nice to have those side cameras for when your front is peeking out out into the intersection and you can't quite see the cars because some Douche SUV is parallel parked blocking your view.

PDC works pretty well on all curbs, but don't trust it once you know you are within "the red light up zone". It loses accuracy as someone wrote earlier because of the mount height, a front camera wold be on my wish list for future cars.

Anyone have the 270 degree surround cameras? Comes with the driver assist package, I think? It seems like those would be ideal for avoiding curbs and parking in tight spaces.

I have it and it's pretty mind boggling on the screen. But I'm still getting used to it in conjunction with the PDC to use it to best advantage. One guy who had it thought BMW had some kind of satellite view LOL. That's kind of what it looks like.

On tall curbs, pdc picks them up.

I park well clear of curbs in my F30.
I was referring to curbs in front or back of you. since the OP was asking about PDC and parking lots, I assumed that's what he was asking about...

Are the front and side cameras noticeable/ugly at all? Where exactly are they?

So if PDC doesn't help you out with curbs I'm wondering what the point is. I can SEE the cars. With parallel parking you only tap the car in front or back when you want to, right? What am I missing?

You can see the cars, but can you see your front bumper? I use it on my wife's X3 every time I pull into our garage, so I can get within inches of the staircase without hitting it, leaving more room behind to open the tailgate when the garage door is closed.

No they are very small. The bumper one is on the side. Didn't realize it was a camera at first.

I've noticed cameras in the corners of each bumper. They are about the size of a PDC sensor, however they're black. They kinda stand out on a ligher color car.

As far as I can tell PDC picks up the curbs in NY just fine. Hell, my 2002 Ford Explorer's rear PDC (which was just a beeping one, no visuals etc) picked up curbs. Made parking a lot easier, cause the distance was by chance set that once it starts beeping, that's exactly when i need to turn the wheel the other way to reverse the rest of the way in.
