MSport / MPerformance Brakes

Quick question:

If we have an MSport, with the 340MM/345MM Combination from factory, the Blue Calipers.

Could we not just order ,the M-Performance Rotors 370MM/345MM (Slotted/Dimpled), and then essentially have an "M-Performance" Brake Kit?

I'm searching up the Part Numbers for the Pads, and it seems like the M-Sport/M-Performance all share the same pads, even in terms of the OEM Brakes? Is that even possible?

So...those with M-Sport Blue Calipers, should technically be able to get the full "M-Performance" BBK for $1000.00? Does that sound right?

No point in paying all that, to get the same calipers in a different color, and the same pads right? Might as well upgrade to some Hawks, and some Stainless Steel Lines for that price, no?

If ur car is a 435/335i m sport with the blue brakes from factory. Your car already has 370mm rotors up front. They are just not dimpled/slotted.

BMW even offers the option for you to do this through the port installation program, as long as you already have M Sport Brakes (2NH). The VIA code is 0Z6W

Someone corect me if I'm wrong but isn't the most important part of the M perf. rotors that they're 2 peice and light weight? Everyone says dimpled and slotted but rarely does someone mention the most important part, the weight.

I wondered this too and when I was at the dealer looking at the M Sport brakes it looks like they are the same two piece design, just not dimpled and slotted. I don't have an F30 (yet) so maybe someone with one can snap a quick pic or confirm?

If we could get confirmation it would be great. With the same caliper and same weight savings there would be 0 reason to pay for the M perf brakes.

From my understanding this is exactly right. I had initially ordered my vehicle with the red performance brakes, but after placing my order I read multiple forums and multiple specs that indicated that the blue M Sport brakes are identical to the Red, Orange, and Yellow M Performance brakes, with the exception of no slot dimpled/drilled rotors. People reported very little difference from standard rotors to the dimpled rotors other than style. They report that it actually worsens your brake dust even more, sometimes get similar brake noise to fully slot drilled rotors, and no great additional performance.

From my research, the parts were approximately $1000 @ getbmwparts.com

Now don't get me wrong, if you find some people that want to do a group buy I may be interested, but I think at the end of the day the limited performance difference is negligible, and it's essentially a $1000 cosmetic mod but still a 50% savings from the M Performance ones for $3000

Yes, both the blue M Sport brake rotors and the M Performance rotors are the same size. BUT...

If you have the blue M Sport brakes, your front rotors weigh:
16.50 Kilogramm / 36.4 Pounds

If you have the M Performance brakes (slotted and dimpled), your front rotors weigh:
11.88 Kilogramm / 26.2 Pounds

You're saving over 10 pounds each of unsprung weight on the front axels alone, not to mention the rear weight savings. Like spending a lot of $$$ on getting lightweight forged wheels. People already know what unsprung weight does for performance so I won't get into that.

So when people say it's purely cosmetic, they are incorrect. Actually, to lose that much unsprung weight, I say it's a good deal at $1,000.

Alright, did some digging around.

If your car, has the 370MM M-Sport Brakes, so 335i/435i, then you can just swap the M-Performance Rotors.

If your car, has the 340MM M-Sport Brakes, so 328i or lower, then you need the new calipers too. The M135i guys over in Europe have the 340MM ones, and, they said they cannot fit the M-Performance Rotor, without a custom Bracket on the OEM M-Sport Caliper, or the M-Performance Calipers.

Makes sense I guess, there must be some sort of "Built-in" bracket onto the M-Performance/435/335i M-Sport Calipers to account for the extra 30MM of Rotor.

That being said too. If you have a 335i, NON M-Sport, you have 340MM Brakes, same as the 328i or lower M-Sport Front Brakes. They're just not painted.

And all this being said too, the following seems to be confirmed:

335i/435i MSport, M-Performance, 335i Non-MSport Fronts, 328i or lower MSport, all use the SAME CALIPERS. DIFFERENT MOUNTING POINTS ON THE M-PERFORMANCE/335i/435i M-Sport to account for larger rotors.

All 4-Pot Fronts, and the MSports/M-Performance are 4-Pot Fronts/2-Pot Rears.

And 18" Wheels, will clear all of the above.

My understanding is that if you have a 328i M Sport, you have the 340mm brakes. However, if you have the M Sport Brake Option (2NH) on the 2014 328i, you get the 370mm brakes.

Can you share your source on this? I don't mean to doubt you, as your info has always been good - I'm just shocked that a few dimples could account for over 10 pounds (almost 30%) of weight savings...

I don't think it was Dimples along DVC...the rotors were made lighter (less material, who the heck knows, it ain't CC)if memory services correctly...

Wow, that is a ton of weight savings at the hub and would be worth the rotor upgrade. Where did you get the weight numbers from?

As I understand it, the rotors are identical other than the dimples... and the calipers are identical other than the color. The rear pads are the same as well (same part numbers even); the front pads are the same size, but different part #s. Interestingly, the M Performance pads are the same part # as the standard pads (for the smaller standard 335 brakes). I've read that the M Sport brake upgrade kit pads are made of a higher performance compound, but I'm not sure if that's actually the case...

Wow then that's crazy 10lbs from dimples doesn't make sense...I'll take a close up and show I guys, these dimples are not that deep.

This forum member from Switzerland did all the research. Great thread to clarify the differences between all the brake options on the F30.

From looking at my brakes (with the wheels on anyway) it looks to me like the front rotors are indeed a two piece design. I can look at them closely when I get home.

Not 2-Piece! Just 1-piece rotors.

Theyd cost a lot more, and be a lot lighter if they were.

Just read through the thread...there was some speculation that "36.4" was a typo... (wouldn't be the first time I've seen a typo listed within BMW weight specs)
It makes more sense that they would be "26.4", or 0.2 lbs heavier than the dimpled M Performance version.

Here we go again lol

Someone please already measure the pad contact width of the 340mm vs 375's.

Good luck with getting aftermarket pads with this mess
