Wow... how times have changed. When I bought my first year E46 coupe they came out with an chip, intakes, exhaust, and all the rest of the suspension/chassis bits wayyyyy before year's end.

I know! Tuning these cars now is more challenging in large part because of the encryption for the ECU. At some point in history I believe Dinan had a closer relationship with BMW so they had easier access to the ECU. But now they probably have to fight their way in.

As for some of the rest, it would be challenging for the aftermarket to compete when BMW offers warranty-safe upgrades for nearly the same price. In practical terms why buy a StopTech BBK (just as an example) when you can pay similar money for the BMW Performance parts, have the dealer install them, and still get free brake pads and warranty service from BMW? Same with suspension. And if they offer a power upgrade for the N20 it kind of shuts the tuner market out. Smart product planning on BMW's part IMHO.

What I really hope for are some good camber plates for the front, a brake duct kit, and a LSD.

I pick up my F30 in a couple days... the OEM BBK is/was installed at the VPC so no extra charges for install. I'm still undecided if I want to tweak the suspension especially since I ordered ZDH so the BBK is the only OEM 'upgrade' I wanted installed. I hope Dinan cracks the encryption instead of doing a piggyback. I think the next item, if someone makes it, will be a short shift kit. I miss driving a car with a SSK...

Mike is correct, BMS Stage 1 will work with both N20 & N26 motors

Hey Mike. What about the tuner codes the ECU can store? How are they removed?

If you install the piggyback to the 328i, then remove it for dealer work and they check the ECU, what will they find?

Cheers

The Stage1 has MAF control so it doesn't trigger the tuner code, but if you are really worried you can also get the BT cable or CT to delete hidden codes.

Beautiful. The 18" wheels are nicer than the optional 19" wheels (that most 335i's) i've seen have. Wonder if anyone has painted the stock sport 19" wheels? (not M package wheels) Must look nicer a bit darker...

I just got off the phone with Cobb today. They expect to have something in the near future for the F30 335. However, it appears they will have nothing for at least the next 6 months for the 328i.

I also spoke to Dinan today. They are still hopeful to have something for the 328i soon. They had expected to have something out by now but it is still not complete. So, perhaps we may get something within the next month or so.

exactly i hate when companys charge so much for a tune. Especially how exhaust companies charge 2700 for a catback lmao. It's just a metal pipe.

When i had my evo ix, i paid $150 for a custom ecu tune.. About 40whp gain, tracked the hell out of the car at wilow springs, had no knock issues or engine issues. Companies or "tuners" like to overcharge bmw / merc owners, because they know they can. General bmw owners aren't real "track" savy u know.. i bet half the people in here will be real happy if they get custom dyno tune at $6~700.

The best indicater for what Dinan's prices will be for the F30 is probably what they charge for the e90 335:

Stage 1 - $1,399

Stage 2 - $1,799 (oil cooler required)

Stage 3 - $2,199 (oil cooler required)

http://www.dinancars.com/shop/index....-Tuning#page=1

Not cheap by any means... However, it will be a reflash (rather than piggy-back) and Dinan backs theirs by matching BMW's factory warranty (4yr/50,000 miles).

One main difference between the evo (I also owned one) and the BMW is the level of encryption in the BMW ecu. Essentially the evo ecu was "open source" insofar as it was easy to get in and make changes. BMW locks theirs down so tight it takes special programming skills just to get in and see what's happening.

Everything with the evo felt like mitsu intended people to race them - from the ease of getting negative camber in the suspension, to the brakes, to the seats, to the ease of stripping the interior. It made for fun modifying experiences! BMW is just a bit different...
