320d

For those who own one or have test driven one, could you please provide feedback on the diesel engine? Diesel/Turbo lag at all? Responsiveness? Comparisons to petrol?

Regards.

I did test drive a 320d a couple of days ago. It felt very responsive in sports mode. It felt much quicker than my 2006 320d. Have not tried the petrol version, so can't compare.

The 320d is quite nimble on it's feet, lots of torque (380Nm) for effortless overtaking. Oh yeah, and the fuel consumption is great.
Drawbacks would be engine vibration and noise.

I have a 320d Efficient Dynamics which coupled with the 8 speed automatic gearbox is just about as civilised as a diesel can be. No turbo lag that I can detect and in Comfort Mode 70mph is still well under 2000 rpm In fact it changes into top at 55 mph on a light throttle at 1600 rpm and yet in Sport mode it accelerates really well. Handling and steering are both good.

If you can, get a test drive - it was what convinced me to buy this car .

Sorry I don't know much about engines but what's turbo lag? Is there a difference between turbo and diesel lag?

Lag is caused by the turbo (diesel is, actually, a turbo-diesel engine). When at low rpm and suddenly floor it, it may take a short moment before the turbo will spool up and create enough boost (1750rpm+ for the 320d) for the engine, therefor the 'turbo lag'.

I took a 320ED for a short drive a week or so ago, mixture of roads, and a small blast on a dual carriageway where overtaking was a doddle. Didnt switch out of comfort mode (very new to BMW was still learning all the options!) and it was a brilliant drive. No complaints...

However, now I want to have another to test the responsiveness of sport ;-)

I own one, why dont u just test drive it for urself. 380NM of torque put it into sports mod and u will realise how much low end torque there is with no lag vs the 328i. 335i has 400NM as a comparison.

There's no lag on the 328i either. As a matter of fact the N20 28i has more torque than the N47 20d on the lower end & upper end of the rev range. Coupled with the shorter final drive of the petrol engine the 328i is much quicker than the 320d.

as a matter of fact? like looking at a grid paper with torque curves plotted on it?? like serious man...do ur self a favor and drive both (oops u cant coz Hong Kong dont stock any 320d) a lower Torque car with a high buzz box engine will high KW will always be quicker..plus all those vids u see on youtube of 320d vs 328i. the 320d will always be slower off the line coz it cant put its full 380N of torque on the road in a drag race Its about in gear acceleration, if we are cruising on a highway side by side i would have overtaken you by the time u realise u need to kick down and rev your ur engine from cruising REV range.

Anything above 100kms the benefit of high KWs and the 328i is the prefered car. Normal day to day drive especially in hilly locations a high Nm car is preferred.

I had a basic loaner F30 320d for a few hours a couple of weeks ago and posted about the total lag of the car in any mode at any speed. Forget about jumping off the traffic lights in that car when they turn green. About 2 seconds before anything meaningful happened.

Then BANG, it flies!!! Perhaps this particular car needed to be attended to. Not sure. Just very happy to be in my car afterwards.

I have driven both & the 28i is much faster, standing start, in-gear what not.
Yes, u have 380Nm, but I still have 350Nm plus more power thruout the rev range & also shorter gearing. Not sure abt the diesel motors, but time & again if u put the 28i on the dyno it is vastly underrated in terms of power & torque.
If u talk abt getting the car off the line at the lights then the 328i is easier to spin its wheels cos from idle to around 1500rpm it has more torque than the 320d (check the factory plots for urself, at idle the 28i has 225Nm vs 180Nm of the 320d). The factory claims for manual in-gear acceleration is also quicker @ 5.4s/6.9s vs 5.9s/7.5s (80-120km/h, 4th/5th gear). Don't believe factory? Autobild timed the 320d @ 4.2s & 5.6s for 60-100km/h & 80-120km/h. For the same range they timed the 328i @ 3.3s & 4.2s respectively.
Yes, a high Nm engine is preferred, but BMW does not badge their cars randomly & they don't call it a 28i for nothing.

I have driven different cars w/N47 in various tunes (i.e. 18d, 20d etc) & under certain circumstances, if caught off-boost, it can feel lethargic for the first few hundred rpms.

at what rev range where those timed?? are u a relax driver that likes to pull vs push the traffic or do u like the buzz... As for badging, frankly if i was to care about the badge I would have gotten something with an M in front of it. Though to exaggrerate my point some ppl have argued the M felt lathargic vs. the 335i, and again.. they maybe right or wrong depending on how eachs driving habits

Yes, I have read & seen such reviews. As we know, the M cars love to be revved. This where they get their momentum. Whereas the 335 has been setup differently, with loads of torque down low in the rev range. Again, we know this as BMW loves to make a point of it.

The factory figures are in-gear times for manual gearbox cars. The times by Autobild are kickdown from top gear cruising (or highest possible gear for the starting cruising speed). The factory times for the 320d are corroborated by the in-gear times recorded by Autocar's roadtest report on a manual 320d. They got 80-112km/h @ 4th/5th in 5.3s & 7.0s respectively (vs the factory times I quoted for 80-120km/h). The rev range for 320d for 80-120km/h in 4th is 2100rpm-3100rpm & in 5th is 1670rpm-2500rpm. The rev range for 328i for 80-120 in 4th is 2500rpm-3800rpm & in 5th is 2000rpm-3100rpm. Pls remember the effective powerband for a diesel engine is 1000-4500rpm whereas for petrol engine is 1000-6500rpm, so a diesel revving at 2750rpm is roughly equivalent to petrol revving at 3750rpm.
My driving style is to use the torque at the highest possible gear w/o the need to kickdown, & I nearly always use EcoPro (never in Sport or Sport+).
BMW does care abt the badging cos it's to differentiate them in their performance hierarcy. If u talk abt M-cars u can only compare like for like (e.g. F10 M5 & F10 535i, not E9x M3 & F30 335i).

When the Torque drops off from 380Nm the KW is still 'increasing' which compensates some. The same cant be said of yours (" no need and dont get defensive You have a faster car u Win, u Win, Yay!! clap clap") when your peak torque drops from 350Nm your KW is on the downhill...

If you genuine have drive the 320d or have spend extended time in a d, you know the relevant rev range is between 1750 and 3000rpm 80% of the time..and thats where the d has 10% more Nm than yours. Its not whose better or higher. or whatever, its each of the nature of the different beast.

+ do you drive Manual or a paddle flap?

Well, yes, for the 20d power is still increasing when peak torque drops off. For the 28i when peak torque drops off power is not on a downhill, it's on a plateau of max power from 5000rpm to 6500rpm. For the 28i is faster than the 20d, in-gear thru-the-gears etc., is an undeniable fact.
I have driven 3 different cars with N47 in various tunes & each time I spent around 2 weeks & over 2500kms in each of them, so I'm not a stranger to the 4-pot BMW diesel. Needless to say the current BMW petrol turbos does everything the diesels can do apart from fuel economy.
I drive 8AT but that doesn't matter cos I always use EcoPro & the gearbox doesn't kickdown easily, plus it changes gear mostly at around 1500rpm.

Yes, so? It doesn't mean I drive slowly, I just use the torque to do the work. On the other hand, have u driven the 328i at length?
