Shocking 320d fuel Consumption!!!!!!
Ok, maybe not shocking but pretty poor for a 320d!
I thought this video featuring a young Plato just reminds us how well engineering has progressed over the last 10 years and how good our F3x's are for fuel consumption. Watching this, the E90 320d has about the same fuel consumption as an F3x 330d (or even 335d?) with A LOT less power. (Which some of you can confirm as you have owned both ......... teaston?!) He seems rather chuft that after a fill-up the range showed 459 miles, (although how he was driving it before we dont know of course). And with a bigger tank than the F3x.

That deisel startup sounds very ruff and I know the e90 is smaller, but it does look more Larry than the F30.
Good find! Asking in English that the French toll road is unlimited is the highlight for me. I have to remember that one. |

I found this when I had a 520d as a CC.
Because it is so slow, you needed to have your foot flat on the floor all the time to make progress. IIRC I averaged circa 37mpg over a mainly motorway 250 miles of driving. |

It doesn't surprise me.
Even my old 320d in F31 guise was poor in comparison to our Aldi. The Xdrive really suffers.....I only ever got around 40-41mpg on average even with careful driving, The 320D really is a gruff noisy unit compared to the Aldi 2l TDI Our A4 is noticeably more refined and quiet if less punchy. I have remied tis now with a Revo remap which gives it a nice head of steam. I am not put off entirely with BMW as I am considering a used M4 for my retirement toy or the Cayman S. I should have bitten the bullet and gone 335 or 330d but as it's used for mundane family motorway use and the fact I'm buying it I couldn't quite justify the purchase price. The M4 is petrol and for 'my' use so it's a different kettle of fish!!

I average slightly better mpg in my 330d (38-40mpg) compared to my pre LCI 164bhp E90 320d auto (36-38mpg)
My E46 164bhp 320d SE auto was better than both though at around 40-42mpg but it did have narrow Michelin Efficientgrip tyres. |

The long term average (83k miles) on my manual 320d is 54.9mpg, I don't drive slowly either.
Be amazed if any of the 3.0 diesel boys can get close to that. |

But saying that I'm currently in Germany and cruising from Munich to Strasbourg and some serious speeds hasn't even dented by 1200mile trip average of 40.9mpg. I did just get overtaken by a Hyundai at 125mph though!? |

everything depends how you drive. I experimented with easy driving on my last full tank - and to my big surprise it returned 39.5mpg instead of 33mpg with my "normal" driving style. Not too sure if I like it cause it was extremely boring but proved to be possible.
On the other hand my friend in Denmark commutes 30 miles one way through A roads ( 50mph speed limit) and he managed to get 60 mpg in his F30 320D

Very much how you drive. I struggle to get below 40 unless I drive like I stole it or on track (around 12!!). Real world, sensible (ish) driving 45 - 47, but I don't generally drive in town.

Depends on how you drive, and whether you are looking to compromise performance in the interests of low consumption. Day-to-day I get ~35mpg from my F31 330D; long runs and using the performance available (i.e. ~Le Mans this year, 2-up, a LOT of camping gear, and three-figure speeds for much of the journey) I get mid-40s.
My wife's 1.2DigT Qashqai averages 37, and shows that small engines have to work harder and run lower gearing relative to their swept volume. Both have their purpose and benefits, but I know which one I like driving. |

I had a loan F30 320d xDrive a couple of weeks ago. I covered about 70 miles during the day on my normal roads, and at a similar pace (which was pressing on for a 20d). It averaged an indicated 38mpg, about 2mpg worse than I would have expected from my 335d on those roads.

In Xdrive with the 8 speed auto consumption was nowhere near what is claimed or expected. Driving it carefully resulted in a consistent 40-41mpg. Compare that to a B8 A4 2 litre Avant and I'm getting 48-51mpg on the motorway slog. The BMW 320d is a bag of nails especially low speed and idle and has unacceptable NVH for a premium brand derv! The BMW salesman also failed to mention that the F31 Xdrive runs SE suspension hence I had to put the ACS springs to help it along in the bends...barge springs to mind. The A4 feels more sporty but is less comfy on motorway cruising. These are my family hacks which the missus drives mostly as thankfully I drive more interesting machinery.

I was expecting alot more even when loosened up I expected high to low 50's....sadly that was not the case even when carefully used on trips....very disappointed! Should have gone straight to a 330d but as I was paying for the car I could not justify the price of buying the 330 or 335d for family duties. Next car will be a petrol retirement toy!!
