Water Logged GT

Last night in Metro Detroit we had torrential rain and flash flooding which I was caught up in my two month old GT. Very sad, had the car towed to my house and waiting for insurance to call and send an adjuster. Smoking in the engine compartment, water was over the door sill. This could be bad.

I hope for your sake they total it. Otherwise it will likely have issues as long as you own it, and be worth next to nothing when its time to sell.

Sorry to hear about the damage. Hope the insurance totals the car. Glad it wasn't worse, and you (and your family) weren't in the car like the recent incident in Nevada.

Yes it's good none of us were injured, although my wife is really bummed out because she was driving and feels responsible. It wouldn't have mattered, I had never seen water rise and go over a bridge from both sides at the same time. The insurance adjuster will not be able to look at the car until the middle if next week. They also said if there wasn't any water inside then they will try to fix it, but we did have water inside just not sure how much. At least my daughter is headed to school and we have another vehicle.

wow...ugh, that was crazy, I live in AA and commute to dearborn, so luckily didn't get in any serious water situations. Like others said, really hope they total it for you. Could either be electrical or maybe your engine took water? a new crate engine will have to run around 20k I'd guess. Good luck.

The dealership told me BMW would void my warranty if it's repaired. Not sure how true that is, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Ummm, not certain how that would work. Maybe you can insist the car be repaired by a BMW certified repair shop.

Totally a Bummer!

FWIW- you might want to consider the resale in the very near future and take your losses now. Getting peace of mind with a new one, could be worth a lot more to you (think of the line at the end of the Master Card commercial ---"Priceless").

I know someone who is going through a "water in the chasis/body" because of a leak in a gromet/weld situation with a Lexis. Their vehicle was with the dealer for several weeks and recently returned. They are actively looking to replace it.

Just food for thought. But it is going to be your call.

Still waiting for the insurance adjuster to come, called another dealer about the warranty, they told me only time BMW would void warranty was if the car was totaled by insurance. However went on to add that if it appeared that whatever new problem could have been caused by water then the repair would have to go against the insurance claim. Did confirm the replacement price on the engine would be at least $20k, the waiting is killing me.

After 10 days the insurance adjuster shows up and comes to the brilliant conclusion the battery is dead and the car must be towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. Seriously, that could have been done 9 days ago.

Depends on how much water the car was in, if they repair it at the dealer by replacing submerged modules (seat modules, FEM) and the wire loom along with a new carpet it does have a chance of surviving the flood. Then again, being that new a car, I suppose you're insured for new value for the first 3 years anyway :-)

Prelim discussions with dealer, motor and motor assembly needs replaced. They think the water was pulled into the ac ducts and most likely made it to the ducts in the rear as well. Looking more and more like a loss. Should know tomorrow for sure, now the daunting task of finding a new one. The search for this one was extensive, I must have talked to a dozen different dealers across the US. Not sure if I will replace with another GT or not.

Good to see things are moving forward.

It will be surely daunting again if the insurers give you the option to choose the next car... My car is 5 months old and I still think is the perfect choice for a young family like ours. Let us know how things develop.

Just order one exactly how you want and try to get insurance to pay for a loaner or rental.

Agreed..I suggest ordering one how you want. However...I happened to run across a couple similar builds to yours on carmax (with only 5K miles, I think the 335 offers good value considering it's what a dealer would want for a like-optioned demo 328gt with same mileage).

The adjuster called this morning and said the car is a total loss but because of the holiday weekend it will be next week before anyone can work on a settlement figure. The water on the inside is dry to the touch, so they were thinking it could be repaired but when the dealer told them the price for the Turbo units would raise the repair another 10k plus the potential for water they think it should be a loss. This will be out second total loss vehicle this year, so I am not excited to think about what will happen to my rates come renewal time.

Second total loss for this year? What happened with the first one?

My daughter 18 YO totaled her Nissan Juke, accident w/another vehicle. That car was only 18k, but still a loss in their eyes.

Water Damaged GT Resolution Close

It has been nearly two months since my 328 GT EB was drowned in the Greatest flood of all time in Metro Detroit. With a busy travel schedule and the insurance company not comparing my car to another GT caused many delays and now I can finally see some end in sight. I expect to have the loan paid off this week and now the search begins.

Good news is my loan will be paid off, bad news-need to find a new car. Took me months to find this one.

When I bought my Vette, there was this site that would list all the Vettes on dealers lots and all of the option packages they had. Unfortunately the guy who ran it got cancer and couldn't continue to run it. Maybe there is a site like it for BMWs.

Or you could just order one.

My search for a new vehicle has started. Visited my dealer over the weekend, and just for kick I drove a couple of Benz units-not impressed with the driving dynamics of either vehicle. I took out a new 2015 C Class, and a 2015 E-350-not an inspiring drive at all. I am back looking at a 4 series GC, or Coup. No one thing for sure is I want the 435, will not go with a 28 model again-too much vehicle for that engine size. Any other suggestions appreciated.
