I have updated the idrive, now
Add-on: HN-002.255.073
Media: MN-002.255.071
Telephone: TN-02.255.070

Samsung S7, v7.0
BMW Connected v3.1.1.3078
Spotify V8.4.26.770

But still NOTHING when I plug in via USB. Considering reseting phone to factoty but I dont know that I'll gain anythign other than wasting my time further.

Any hints/tops welcome. I have emailed BMW customer services.

Pretty much the same as me and mine works on bluetooth without issue

Have you tried opening the app whilst the phone is paired to the car with ignition live to see if thats what it needs to initialise?

You have iDrive hardware v4 - there is nothing you can do to update the firmware on your car to enable Spotify integration with an Android device.

You have 2 choices - use an old iphone as per the OP or upgrade the headunit to an NBT EVO unit with iD5/6 firmware - the second option won't be cheap but it's the only way. There are companies in China working on Android Auto boxes that integrate with iDrive, there are Apple Carplay versions already, but until that happens you are stuck - I am in the same position as well but I purchased the Deezer Online Entertainment subscription and I'm happy with that.

I can get the app to work ok (crashes frequently) but the volume is VERY low. I need to turn it up to around 3/4 volume to get it even close to what I want. I then sh!t myself when I change over to DAB and it bursts my eardrums! Anyone else experience this?

can someone explain this to me.

do i need to pay BMW for anything or just download the connected AP??

then what do i do? is it over bluetooth or cable only?

edit im a 2014 with business nav so i bet i dont have a new enough version of ID
