Why the hate?

I just don’t get the hate of some people, not only towards BMW owners but pretty well any brand car considered to be up market. When I see someone in a nice car I think “good on them” and admire the car, I don't care how much it cost. But since owning my BMW some of the comments I have received have left me astounded. My 4x4 cost more than my BMW and people don’t feel the same way about that. I've owned about 25 cars in my life from old bangers, V8's, sports cars and 4x4's but have never experienced anything like this before I got the BMW.

But worse still I've seen comments on this and other forums where other BMW owners consider people with the “lower end” models are somehow only buying it for the badge and are pretentious snobs. I got a 320i because it suited my wife and I and it was within our budget, but more than anything it was simply the car we liked the most out of all the ones we looked at. So why be so condescending because it’s “only” a 320i? I imagine 1 & 2 series owners also cop it a fair bit.

I’ve come to the conclusion that these people are the one’s with a problem and I’m going to continue enjoying my new car.

I agree with you. My Lexus SUV gets no hate and it cost more than my M3. The hate really becomes apparent if I am out in my M3 or C4S. Most often from left lane crawlers when you dare to overtake in the right hand lane on the highway. I drive carefully and defensively so I see no need for this type of attitude.

People are just jealous. I once drove my Exige to a family gathering and a friend of a relative was there with their kid. It came up at some point that the car was mine and the kid says "My dad said it's a poor man's Ferrari". They drove there in a Mercury Sable. Bottom line is that jealous people will always reach for a way to tear down those who have what they wish they had. Can't it just be a nice Lotus? It has to be a shitty-something-else? SMH.

I mean, it's not like I drove there in a Boxster, am I right????

People need to put others down to make themselves look good/feel better because they can't do it on their own merit. It happens all the time not just with car people but in business, etc too. It can get annoying but you just have to feel bad for those people

Sometimes, we all enjoy a good trolling session. Something else might be bothering us in our lives, and we project that unto others.

By the way, since you only have a 320i, I'd take the badges off. Less embarrassing.

The 320 cops a lot of shit not because the car is nice but because it screams you only bought it for the badge and couldn't afford the 328.

Sometimes though, it makes sense to buy the base model. My missus needed something to go to work in (she's a lawyer) that was not embarrassing, we had an 8 year old Accent 'cos i figure cars are a depreciating asset. So base stripper X1 it was, it does what i need it to do, allow her to park alongside the other lawyers without having to feel awkward.

Reminds me back when I had my first BMW, a 528e in the mid 90's. I would hear the occasional stereotype drug dealer rap against me in my old neighborhood. Really? Its just a 528e! OP, just cut another hole on the right side of your rear apron and install another tailpipe, remove said 320i badge so ppl will think its a 335. Problem solved

I didn't see the point as the only difference was 19" wheels, better stereo, pro Nav and comfort access (I did add leather). And if I was after a faster or more powerful car I wouldn't be looking at a 4cyl. I've attached a copy of what the standard features were which I think is different from the U.S. And Canada. We also have a 316 here.

Wow we get weird packages back home eh (i'm from Sydney), weird. Base engine here is the 180KW 4 banger. So i was wrong, the 316 is the base, so you are being ragged on for being a posh bastard.

Christ we get ripped off at home.

Are you implying badges in any BMW is something else than embarrassing?

I'm just happy to see you debadged yours. In true European fashion, if you have a large engine you debadge it and if you have a smaller engine you just slap a few M badges on it...

They stayed on for two hours after I got him. I was too tired to do it straight away but I couldn't even look at him with those still on.

I don't care about badges in a ford. I know they are there probably to glue parts together but in German cars they annoy the hell out of me except in Audis. Those all look so much alike I'm keeping mine on so I won't accidentally steal someone else's car.

It is a proven fact that the more M badges your car has the faster it goes and the more horsepower it makes.

Considering the fact that 76% of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck having a $50k+ car may cause some tension/jealousy/anger... Additionally BMW brand (or drivers) are perceived negatively by some people.

Nominee for "Best reply/post of 2015".

I've definitely experienced it both ways but generally positive. I have ALWAYS taken the approach of Why hate? Congratulate!
