Technically yes; pressing the button on the phone is in fact 'using a handheld mobile device' which is the offence complete...

Jus going back; can we reply to a message after its been read out using iDrive??? How?

There is a menu on the left of the message to let you reply or forward, and you can then use the voice recognition to dictate the reply. With an iPhone you just can't send it though!

One of the reasons I didn't go for the cradle- here's hoping BMW and Siri integration is developed, be great to trigger from the steering wheel

I think it may be a new NBT Nav feature. Do you have the older system?

No mate, it's completely different hardware. It only seems to work on a few phones anyway and with no apple products.

I can hold my speech button down on the steering wheel and activate Siri. Anybody else tried this?

You need the ProNav NBT to enable eyes free.

It can be coded on with the NBT, as long as you have at least iDrive 4.2.

You need code:

ECU: HU_NBT
Section 3003
Function: CE_DEVICE_SPEECH_RECONGNITION
Default Value: nicht_aktiv
New Value: aktiv

My understanding is the business nav is still based off the older CIC software. So it's not available.

I don't know if it can be coded

However, in iOS 8 Siri can be voice activated when on external power by just saying "Hey Siri"

Option just needs activating in the iDevice options. It works, ish... It seems the iDevice needs to have the screen in to work reliably...

Anybody got any instructions on getting email to come up on the idrive? I have texts displaying but I'm not able to reply through the idrive.

FYI, I have an iPhone 6 on ios8.1

Email is a pig. Its something like, have email open, connect to car (via usb), shut email down, open up Connected Drive app. All new emails will show. But they only show as the message icon. And nothing - messages or email get marked read on the device.

Unlike my old HTC one where the icon in iDrive was different depending on if I had an email or sms, plus it marked them read, and I could view older ones, not just ones that arrived while connected.

Sort it out Apple and BMW - massively behind on interoperability.

Sounds really long winded, I may give it a go, but I'm not holding my breath!
