ok, after hearing that comment about the x drive only, i finally called one of the largest dealers in canada to investigate. surprisingly he confirmed that the diesel x drive will start production in july for delivery in august. This is the only version of the diesel he had paper work detailing. i asked about rwd and/or manual tranny and he said he would look into that for me. The sales rep said he expected that the diesel x drive version of the 3 series to follow the 328i x drive option configuration. Although he admitted he didn't have any concrete confirmation of this. in canada, this would mean it would be auto only, with only the sport line offering paddle shifters. ugh!!! he also confirmed it would be called a 328d x drive. the 328i x drive is offered in a classic line (i.e. with leatherette) starting at 39k or the luxury, sport or modern lines starting at 46k. if the diesel were priced relatively the same as the comparable european 320d and 328i, the 328d will end up being about $1500 cheaper than the 328i. so we are looking at 37.5-44.5 starting?
he didn't say a rwd version wasn't coming but i could see america getting the rwd and x drive versions while canada getting only the x drive. he also didn't say the transmission options are confirmed, only that the diesel x drive is for sure a go. Additionally, diesel fuel is more expensive as well (here in the U.S.), however, if the miles per gallon offset the price that is another matter that is entirely debatable. |

as announced last summer, the 2L twin power 184hp diesel will be making it's way to NA this coming august. this engine is from the 320d in europe and is actually 2000 euro cheaper than a 328i. if they are simply re-labelling this model as a marketing tool to make it more palatable to americans and then charge a premium, we are all getting majorly ripped off. duped. hood winked. scammed. a manual 320d is 35,350 euro. a 328i is 37,400 euro, everything else being equal. as a further reference, the 320i is 2300 less than the 320d. now, it's been suggested to me by a bmw sales rep, that it may have more hp. ie a little over 200hp. either way, they must realize that diesels are still a hard sell in america and need to price this model accordingly. by the way, diesel is cheaper then most grades of fuel so this car is going to be attractive model.

According to the latest BMW release, the F31 diesel will be x-drive only. i am sooo bummed - after waiting a long time to get a diesel touring, they do this. I have no use for all wheel drive, and flat-out do not want it. Strange that BMW is trying to be like Audi.

A few comments:
1. With diesel, the number that really counts is the torque 2. Diesel gas consumption is close to hybrid 3. If they put the 8AT in it, it would have to be reprogrammed to run at lower rpm. I drove about 2000km in a Golf TDI (manual) in France and I *loved* that thing! PS: A diesel X3 would be nice! |

I believe the diesel fuel economy makes up the difference in fuel price, so it's about a wash there, but the torque will slaughter the 328 gas engine. I think it's much harder to find coupe buyers who want diesel, percentage-wise. On the other hand, the raw sales numbers of a diesel coupe would probably be higher than a diesel wagon, since nobody seems to want a wagon. |

I am starting to suspect the 328d got scrapped for the US and was replaced by the 320i
