MotorTrend Magazine says:
G35 is dead in the middle of the pack (qualifying it as a boring car) Volvo (being the most powerful car) is ranked second after the BMW (surprisingly for a Volvo) F30 is First Car and Driver Magazine says: G35 is fun to drive (pratically taking the "fun to drive" award from the BMW MVP) Volve is ranked last of 5 cars (despite being the most powerful car) F30 is First It might be confusing to us all how the two magazines differ on the classment, as well as the F30 review, but All it matters to me is : F30 is First on both comparo.... despite all the criticism and negative points of this car... And the conclusion i am drawing out of those reviews: BMW F30 has the best compromise between a boring car and a fun car to drive... the polyvalence of the F30 is what earns him it's praises... the ability to adapt to any situation, not just stuck in one type/style of driving... This real comparo will be when the ATS comes out... ... there will be another rematch... but by that time, i would have gotten my 335i back to the west coast, and i wouldn't care anymore as i would be so with it !

The eye wants something as well and the ATS lost big time in that sense alone. I wouldn't even consider the ATS if it was a 1000 times better car than the F30.

I wanted to sound as impartial, non-bias, and considerate of other cars as much as possible... but like you said... even if ATS was to become king of the hill, i would still be sold by the BMW...

Here's my takeaway from the article:
The F30 328i loses 30 feet in braking performance as compared the the '06 325i (my car) C and D basically said the E90 would have beaten the F30 and go find one while you can. Sad. |

This may be but the soul of the car is gone. Give me back the hydraulic steering, take away the ridiculous start / stop and give me a DCT option via a 335IS of some sort and I am back in an F30. I will not and cannot give into to that 8 Speed tranny which simple has too many gears and a steering system that gives me no enjoyment in driving the car.

having test driven an f30, I actually think the 8at is great. my issue with BMW in general is that it has become more of a luxury brand rather than a sports brand. I think introducing the ///M performance line will recreate the core sports values, but u will have to pay dearly for it.

The sport package cars definitely come with summer performance tires and not the all seasons on this test car. I saw a post during the test drive period at Laguna Seca that a couple test drivers had all seasons on their sport package test cars. I suspect in all the tire replacements/switching during worldwide testing of these cars somebody in the BMW garage mounted the wrong tires on some of these press cars.

This is pretty much what I expected from C&D. Whatever one may feel about their priorities, it is still one of the more consistent mags out there. And on that note, I don't think any other magazine in the US cares more about the elusive and subjective art of steering feel. So I would've been very shocked if C&D let this one slip without bitching.
They did still give the nod to the 3er, which many non-BMW owners would take as yet another proof that they are on BMW's payroll. I think that's non-sense, and in reality, it's because the A4 is getting old and the G is very old. I think it's pretty clear that the F30 is a clear step forward in most areas, while a clear step backward in a couple of areas that some enthusiasts care deeply about. Quote:

Seriously. I feel like everyone has to bash it, because they actually made it better. It's like the rich kid at school that everyone has to make fun of because they're jealous. I guess the new 3 is so good that people are trying their damnedest to find SOMETHING wrong with it. It was the same way with the previous car and as soon as the hype dies down a bit, people will recognize the merit where it is due.

I own an E90 and drove the F30 today. It handles well, but not better than the E90, the steering is actually less direct and less precise. The interior is a let-down as far as I'm concerned. There are even more plastics than before, I just hate the "iPad" screen (looks like a toy and is not well-integrated) and all the lines and bends make me feel seasick. |

My personal take on this is that, compared to the new 5er, X3, and Z4, all of which got seriously more luxurious and seriously less engaging, the F30 really turned out to be much truer to its "core" values than I expected. I suspect by the time LCI rolls around, even the EPS will improve substantially. However, the way this car is marketed/configured at the last stage (such as the marketing emphasis on the gadget/fuel economy, the separation of lines, OEM tires, etc) again reminds me that BMW continues its push to become the new/better Mercedes. BMW started out as a maker of non-harsh, non-cheap driver's cars. I believe it's slowly transforming itself into a maker of non-boring, non-old-people luxury cars. Not the same thing. |

Didn't the Audi only loose to the BMW due to MPG? If they want to compare apples to apples they should wait and compare the X-drive to the Audi. Had they done that the Audi would have won according to total points.
Not good considering the A4 is ~5years old. |
