Performance so close as to be irrelevant, but the AMG engine sounds better to me. I love the muscle car vibe!

Strangely, I think I'd rather have the Mercedes. It exudes more class whilst still delivering knockout performance. And yes, it sounds good, not sure why as both engines are very similar.

I really wish bmw would sack all their exhaust sound engineers and poach amgs ones. I just don't understand how bmw can't make a good 'zorst sound these days.
I'd have the bmw in a nice metallic blue mind. I really am liking the new 5 series more. |

Why disappointed?
Car and driver with the 1ft roll timed it at 2.8 to 60! Can be varying factors but both are as fast on the day. The M5 I bet will be the faster track car which means it probably handles better! They do the exhaust s*** on purpose. The M performance one sounds immense! Obviously costs a lot mind you! |

The E63 is also available as an estate, so that would swing it for me. If I were ever to be in the market for a £90k car family car of course, which isn't likely unfortunately.

Yes, says near the end of the vid. Merc 850Nm, M5 750Nm.
He seemed proper gutted that the M5 didn't win, lol! I wouldn't say no to either, however as above ... BMW need to up their game when it comes to M car exhausts. IMO only the M2 sounds half decent. And probably about to be ruined with the new M2 Competition Pack that will have the M3/4 S55 engine fitted. (Only talking about noise here, not the engine itself)

I'm surprised how little dram there is from both. They seem rather 'meh' as the kids say.

M division really have to up their game , not only exhaust wise. M5 was always like a holy grail of high performance luxury barges , look now , competition is now making equal if not better cars. In my eyes Merc is better package. On top of all they do estate version as well. Driven both last week in Spain and wouldnt be surprised if E kicked M ass on track.

The Merc does sound better, and perform a little better thanks to that impressive torque figure, but the droopy melted look that all Mercs seem to have these days would put me off. Have they taken on Chris Bangle’s less talented brother?
The M5 looks a lot better to me at least. £90k is crazy money though. I imagine in a couple of years you’ll be able to get a 1 year old for half of that. |

I wouldnt be sure about faster on track bit ..... AMG really sorted this suspension out and it will filter down the range. Scary times for M and RS.

I think the status quo will continue as it always has... which is extremely annoying! When they put them on a track we'll find out for sure

I wonder if the mileage on the cars made any difference, the M5 being an 18 plate with I can't imagine many miles on it and probably still tight. The Merc being a 17 plate might be a bit looser. Just a thought..

semantics there- m5 is best car in the world Looking forward to the grand tour review which Will be pointless of course. Probs for merc for me - image far too many Amg badges on sheds, sprinters, crabing & chintzy image so M5 wins still if I win lottery I’ll try both
