Intercoolers

Hey guys. I tryed searching but couldnt find enough personal experiences with intercoolers. I eventually plan to go pure stage 2 turbos and was wondering which intercoolers everyone is using for this setup.

Will the VRFS race imtercooler be sufficent or the Wagner EVO 2 or Evolution Racewerks intercooler?

Thanks

I run VRSF's race FMIC on my FBO F30. On e30, I have seen consistent 16-18lbs boost pulls with IAT temps kept at bay. In reviewing logs, one thing I have noticed about this FMIC is its superior recovery capabilities.

What your IAT range above ambient before, during and after a pull?

In day in/out driving my IAT is generally between 10-15*F above ambient. If I sit in traffic, we're talking 20-40*F above but it quickly drops once I start moving.

As far as during and after pulls, I reviewed several logs when running the standard Wagner and VRSF Race. According to data:

- both FMICs dropped IATs below ambient
- VRSF held lower IATs throughout the pulls and did not increase as more boost was produced (The Wagner however would heat soak and slightly increase IATs as more boost was produced)
- I don't have enough data for "after pulls" as the JB4 is set to cancel logging once I'm off 90% petal.

Hope this helps.

VRSF race is a good choice for upgrade turbo

My favorite would be Wagner EVO II comp (its lighter and recovers temps faster than any other FMIC out there).

I run the Wagner Evo 2 Competition IC and couldn’t be happier with its performance and fit. Works well with my ER piping too.

I can tell you not to bother with a Phoenix. While better than stock, it still heat soaks and ramps IATs up 40* on pulls. It recovers decently, but it's not particularly efficient.

You may also want to consider http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1438999.

Peter has quite a lot of experience and I trust his judgement (FD: He did my JB4 install/setup). He's always been a fan of the Wagner EVO2 and he also seems to like CSF's new intercooler!

I got the dinan one, no complaints, easy install, looks clean.

However this was a couple years back, there might be better options on the market now.

Something is not right here. It's physically impossible to cool charged air below ambient temps unless you are spraying meth or water. The FMIC is an air-to-air heat exchanger where the ambient air is used to cool the charged air.

Dinan, best build quality and performance gains. Slick Separate air duct to pull air from bottom when needed as well as front and sides. Downside one of the more expensive IC’s on the market, worth it here, also running big turbo as well

Benefits of the Dinan High Performance Dual Core Intercooler:

+ Max gains of 15 HP and 13 lb-ft of torque @ 6250 RPM (greater gains and a wider power band can be achieved when paired with stage 3 DINANTRONICS)
+ Face area 240% larger than the stock intercooler setup for maximum cooling efficiency to deter heat soak.
+ Charge Air Pressure drop: 0.80 PSI (25% improvement over stock)
+ Charge Air Temperature drop: 155º F (11% improvement over stock)
+ Charge Air Temperature / Ambient Temperature Delta: 18º F @ 6250 RPM (60% improvement over stock)

Nice choice!

What stage are you running Dinan at now?

Only get the VRSF if you plan on having VRSF charge pipes or already have VRSF pipes.

You can't go wrong with either of those actually. The VRSF race line up are great cores and performers. Good value too.

Did you have an aftermarket intercooler installed prior to installing the Dinan (or have you ever compared this one with the competition)? Looks like a great design, just curious if there is a noticeable difference when used with other upgrades vs other aftermarket FMIC?

used a Wagner Race before and have been much happier with the build and quality performance improvements noticed with this unit instead. Its more money but I was able to see the improvement over the Wagner.

Hello guys. So I just got the VRSF race intercooler and chargepipe. The intercooler did not come with the support brackets for the top like the ER does. For you guys with the VRSF, did yours come with the support brackets? If not, what did you do? Thanks.
