what does this light mean?

Just picked up my new 335xi last night after ED (dropped off in Munich 12/19, picked up in California 1/31. Not too bad).

Anyway, there is a warning light on the dash that looks like two headlights pointed away from each other. It is right between the fuel gauge and the speedometer. I looked it up in the manual on page 72 and the description is "Parking lamps, headlamp control". Not really too informative. Does that mean something is broken? That I have something turned on (oddly, it stays lit even after the car is completely turned off)? Or that my car simply came with parking lamps and headlamp control???

Anyone know?

Thanks

These lights come on to let you know the parking lights are on. However, they probably shouldn't stay lit after your car is completely turned off (all lights off etc).

Check what position your light selector switch is on. Put it on either auto or off, and see if the light is still on.

When you have the headlamp switch in the auto position, the light simply indicates that the headlights are on. Not that I've tried it, but I'll bet it doesn't illuminate if you physically turn the switch to "on" as opposed to "auto".

If you've come from a previous BMW then I understand the confusion - all I had on my E92 and E82 to tell me the auto lights were on, was a tiny light actually on the light control itself, not very helpful really! It's music more handy having it in the instrument panel itself.

Furthermore, (and I don't know if it's just US Spec) Daytime running lights are auto on (angel eyes), even when the headlamp switch is turned off. You can change that setting in the idrive, and then when the switch is turned off, your lights will truly be off and you definitely shouldn't see the light on the dash.
