So does anyone think BMW introduces the three cylinder as the base engine at some point for the F30? If that's the case, BMW may only offer the I6 in "M" trim (M335i, M3, etc) and it may cost you significantly more to get 6 cylinder power... Keep in mind the N55-powered F30 doesn't comprise a very big percentage of the numbers in the US (in the real world, not in the forum world), and even fewer are sold globally.

Are you serious, the 330i is faster than the G37? I have the G37 right now which was not that much faster than my 306hp G35. http://m.motortrend.com/roadtests/oneyear/112_0710_2006_bmw_330i/viewall.html Here it's running to 60 at 6 seconds. These guys have the G37 at 5 seconds. Not even comparable. It may have been more refined yes but faster, not in the real world. FWIW the quarter mile time is not far off from my X5 35i. I understand why the OP would not want to be caught up in this situation. And he is right, people were pissed back then. The N55 is certainly not underpowered in today's standards

Life's too short to worry about these things. I could have waited and opted for the better NAV but its still a good system, could wait on a new engine cause i too thought about that but the N55 is a proven reliable performer. I just got my car a few days ago and I'm not looking back.

The straight 6 will continue to be offered but the architechture will be shared with M-cars (just like the N/S63 V8). |

I'm still stuck on this part. Who just picks up a 335 for their GF? I guess the OP lives a different lifestyle than me (in a good way).

I'm in the market for the MY13 335 too but I'm a little worried about what could happen in September when they release MY14.
It can go both ways. New engine, new nav, same price (or just a little more). Or they could ditch the 335 and replace it with a high-priced M335 which will become your only option for I-6. And then you're stuck with the 328 in your price range... Not good. So really it can go both ways. We know what we have now and we don't know what we will have then. Better be safe than sorry I suppose? Plus the N55 has a proven track record and if I've learned something in life, it's that you don't want to try anything too new because it always backfires in your ass. |

You right, these guys were so unlucky, rather than end up with the most powerful NA engine produced for the series they could have bought an '07 335i and experienced all those HPFP failures and recalls.

There will always be new cars as people have said.
Luckily a big chunk of BMW owners lease, so by the time the "340i" becomes out and available widely my lease will be up. ;-) Every car deals with this...you can either buy the super robust late model car, or the new car that probably has a bunch of issues but cool new things to go along with it. The 335i with the N55 is still an incredibly compelling engine, and leaves me little desire for more power (and that was coming from a track-prepped Corvette with 525hp).

The N55 is a beautiful engine. It revs, generates tons of torque, and is smooth and quiet. It is the best engine I have ever had in a car. And it is a proven design. I really don't know how BMW is going to improve on this. I'm happy with mine and will be for many years to come. There is always something new. You could sit on the fence forever not buying anything because the next great thing is coming. Make your pick for what you want to drive and enjoy it till its old. Then start again.

Because the "newest" BMW product is usually full of first-production bugs. I would actually rather have a one of two year old BMW technology, that has been ironed out and is not in the shop every other week.

I doubt they'll come out with a MUCH more powerful engine. The new M3 is rumored to be around the 400hp/400tq area. The PPK for the N55 would probably match any new engine they come out with for the new coupe in my opinion.
The horsepower wars are pretty much over. Infiniti and Lexus just unveiled their new 3-series fighters with the same engines. I believe they have focused most of their R&D into smaller more fuel efficient engines that can make decent horsepower. BMW does not have any motivation to upgrade the current motor. Currently, the car is already more fuel efficient than the competition. I thought about it. Then weighed the options. Decided to move forward with the F30. |

I don't think the gap will be as big as it was with the 2006/2007. I've been thinking about this too, since I'm in the market, but unless they did a huge gap like before then I wouldn't worry about it. I don't need every ounce of power and I don't need the latest and greatest car with the extra amount of power. The 335s out now are just fine for me and as long as there's not a huge change to basic features/price then I'm not stressed. I'll still end up with a good car, either way.

I've been holding off my order specifically because I was one of those who purchased an 06 330. I won't let that happen again, I guess well see what comes in July with the 4 coupe.

I expect the biggest changes will be technological, partly to make driving responsive and easy, partly for safety, partly just for fun. Alerts for drifting too much (drowsy), alerts for cars that might be about to strike you, pedestrians, pretensioning the brakes, watching the traffic lights and speed limits. Mercedes just announced something to help stay centered in the lane, if I heard right.
I'm disappointed how far the car computers are behind a good smartphone - that will no doubt improve. Cars can integrate better with home computers and appliances around the house (and vice versa). I think cars will more rapidly become obsolete from the improving computers, not from engines outdated in raw power. In any case, don't wait for the ultimate machine to buy. |
