You guys are getting it backwards I think. The GT loses.
Cargo loading just means loading "deck" height. I guess if you're struggling to lift up the box or whatever 33" off the ground, you're going to struggle to lift it to 30" high (Touring).

GT wins... overall capacity volume, legroom, etc.

Not overall, specific rear luggage space, 5 vs 8.

You realize that rear loading capacity is measured with the seats down? What I'm saying is that I think when you have four passengers on board. Actual usable rear luggage space is less in the GT.

Not true. With rear seats up (i.e. four passengers on board), the F31 volume is 495 liters, the F34 volume is 520 liters. With the seats down, the F31 volume is 1500 liters vs. 1600 in the F34.

GT wins

Yeah, you're right, I'm surprised by the 5 vs 8 difference just for 3 inches of load floor height.

What do you mean by the "5 vs. 8 difference"?

I was just guessing on the load floor height difference of 3". Obviously the F31 is lower, but I had to eyeball the difference based on the comparo pictures.

They only scored it based on the height of the trunk lower lip. 4" difference, slightly more difficult to load heavy stuff. Do you really consider this significant?

There are three places where the touring beat the GT in the spreadsheet from the AutoBild site. There is a 5 vs 8, and this category is the "loaded" category, then there is a 5 vs 7 and this is in the "traffic" category, I think the third category is the "turning circle" that the gt losses in. In all the other categories the gt wins.

I'm assuming that "loaded" is the translation for the category that has to do with carrying capacity and general ease of handling cargo.

It's not significant for me. But for someone who is buying this for increased flexibility in carrying things it might be. If a review looks at a product in a category of carrying or cargo capacity and gives it a rating of 5 vs 8, then I would be concerned if this was a feature of interest. Wouldn't you?

So it's taller and heavier than the F31. I'm sure then it will drive better.
Who cares. Now that there's no MT option for these types of cars, I'm shopping all versions.

Good god, BMW...sigh. Aztec rear end look alike.

Who cares if the GT has a little more room, here and there - it's hideous.

Touring all the way.

3 GT

I went onto the Auto Bild web site to view the article myself. I don't speak German but Google helped with that. There was nothing about the ride and handling combination. It was more about the look and practical features of the car. I saw that the full article could be downloaded for 2 euro. I wouldn't mind paying the 2 euro, but as indicated, I don't understand German. Has anybody read the full article? What were the comments about ride / handling / comfort / quiet of the drive?

For customers of the BMW 3er Gran Turismo this would be the deal breaker.

Compared to an SUV, the GT is sleek. Low? Who the heck wants low? Low cars are a dime a dozen and hard to get in and out of. Station wagon lovers diss'ing the GT only affirms it's good looks.

If I wanted rear leg room, then I would just get a F10.

I think the 3GT has more rear legroom than an F10, or very close. Plus, regular F10 is a boat, certainly 3GT will drive better. At the least, it will weigh 400lbs less.

Remove the fancy GT sticker and it reads hatchback. Just like my beloved Citroen Xsara 1.6l

I think you are forgetting how much bigger the 3GT is than the standard 3-series sedan. As an example, based on EU unladen weight(from BMW UK site), the 328 GT will be 55lb less than a 528i sedan.

328i: 3366lb
328 GT: 3674lb
528i: 3729lb

It is also only 2.7in shorter in length than a 5 sedan.

328i: 182.5in
328 GT: 190.4in
528i: 193.1in

To me it looks closer to a 5-series in driving dynamics than a 3-series.
