Unhappy Brake squeal! [Solved]

Since fitting my 400M winter wheels I've had brake squeal, when coming to a stop or slowing to a near stop they squeal for the last couple of seconds. I had no squeal at all with my 403M's!

I know quite a few people have complained about this in the past, but it seems to not be around so much since the M Sport plus pack came out, which further suggests that it's because of the 400M's.

Has anyone else noticed this since putting your winter wheels on?

I can't say I've noticed anything since the change over. 18" 441M's.

8500 miles on summers, 400 miles so far on winters.

Squeal is surely friction induced vibrations. Could it be something simple like some grit knocked under pad or possible different wheel bolt tensions leading to a slightly different alignment of the rotor?

Could be worth trying different torques. I've done them to the recommended 120nm, but the summer wheels were done really tight from the factory, I had to get the breaker bar out for some of the bolts!

BMW recommended 120Nm but the form said 140Nm...

I needed I 2' breaker bar and my weight to undo my wheel bolts. However, 140Nm was easy to apply with a 2' torque wrench.

Highlandpete and Brigand recommended the 5 point star torquing technique at 140Nm.

Basically, number the bolts 1-5 clockwise and tighten them 1,3,5,2,4. Evenly torques up the wheel.

My brakes started squealing again over the last couple of days - I think it's the weather. Planning a couple of heavy braking sessions tomorrow, that stops it every time.

No problem here after 9000 miles on 403Ms since May and 1000 on 400Ms over the last 2-3 weeks.

Just went out and torqued them all up to 140nm, see how that goes tomorrow.

That what I'll try on a quiet country lane if the torque hasn't made a difference!

Well the increased bolt torque seems to have fixed the problem!

Thanks @Rich9600

A couple of years ago on my F30 I used to have 'brake squeal'.
It was a brake disc steel weather shield which had worked loose and was rubbing on the disc.
Only seemed to happen at low speeds when braking.

Glad my guess seems to have helped.

I wonder how many BMW technician man hours have been spent on this?...

Pretty much first thing to do with squeaky brakes (other than cheese) is, wheels off both sides, clean, airline etc give it a good check over, checking brakes and then wheels back on re torquing to correct levels.

Then road test.

Can't imagine it has changed since Adam was a lad.

One big issue of people not putting wheels on correctly, as in tightening up incorrectly is warped disks, noisy brakes etc.

I have seen mates just tightening them up as if a clock face.

Yes 120nm for the M12 as used on E9x etc.

For F3x they use M14 and that's 140nm
