Wheel bolts were loose... ?

After changing to 20" rims from stock, the guys that put on my wheels asked if the new rims needed any special/different wheel bolts other than stock.. i said i dont know so they just put the wheels on using the standard wheel bolts and told me to check the bolts in a couple days. So today is a couple days and all the bolts on all 4 wheels were loose.. how do i know what wheel bolts too use?

There are a couple of different kinds of bolt head shapes. You should check to see that the wheels you put on have the same shaped journals as the wheels that you took off. If not, you'll need to get new hardware. The mechanic probably should have noticed if the hardware was incorrect...

Talk to whomever you purchased your wheels from and ask them. Most aftermarket wheels use the same taper as stock BMW wheels, 60 degrees.

The other thing to consider is that the shop may not have torqued the wheels properly to begin with.

Could it be you may need longer bolts due to the change in offsets.

The F3x chassis is 103 ft/lbs. The E9x chassis was 9x ft/lbs. Lots of people seem to not know this.

Was that the issue?

You should have roughly 7 full turns of the lug bolts to tighten. Depending on the offset of the wheel, you may need longer bolus to achieve this. As other have mentioned there are two lug options: conical and ball. Be sure your wheels match the seat of your lugs. If you are not using the correct shaped bolt you will have notably less surface area to seat agains.

Hope this helps!

Did the installer used a torque wrench to tighten the bolts?

Im betting the shop just impact gunned the lugs on and sent you on your way and they just werent torqued properly.

I doubt it, I don't think 90ft/lbs is going to flat out come loose.

I use the BMW jack kit pretorqued wrench to tighten my lugs and haven't had an issue.
