HPFP

I assume the 28i has one.
As we know, the N54 (less commonly N55) is very prone to HPFP failures so is the N20 much the same?
What make and model is the 35i & 35is HPFP?
Then what does the 28i use?

Is failure likely?

The f30/n20 uses 13517584461 and fits these cars as well. Considering this was an October 2010 problem, I believe BMW has addressed it by now with new components.

good question. hope it has been resolved but like any other mechanical piece of equipment ever made it is prone to wear n tear. by the end of the day dnt be afraid to push ur car to its limits.. that's what the warranty is there for.

BUMP! It has been several months since this thread was created now. Any news from anyone? Any HPFP failures?

Cars with the N55 use part number 13517610761.

This one was a new design with March 2012-forward production.

No news is good news! I'm pretty sure we would've heard of any member's failures in the general F30 section so it's looking good.
13k miles on mine and it's running as sweet as a nut. It's been brilliant too see how much this engine has changed since 7mls on the clock haha, it's lovely!

As with all of my cars, I do expect a problem or two at some point in it's ~80,000mls (3 year) life time, and it isn't really going to detract from ownership because hey, nothing lasts forever! That said, I'm not expecting an issue that will prevent running, such as a HPFP fail.

My 330d had an oil leak and a glow plug control unit failure.

So my 328i... maybe a spark plug failure? Adaptive Xenon failure? Injector perhaps at most severity. I'd be happy with that! Especially the way my dealership handles everything, I have no worries. Sadly, not many others can say that and I do realise how lucky I am!

The HPFP used in the N20 is the same ones used on the N63. Driven by the camshaft. From what I've heard there havent had much failures with those pumps, but of course it is a BMW so anything can fail at any time.

The injectors are the same ones on the N55, so far those injectors have been pretty good. No longer the piezo electric ones on the N54.

As long as you have warranty there really is no worries. Worry when warranty is over.

Fixed

I thought all BMW's used Piezoelectric injectors for their efficiency. What type is being used now?

According to BMW's N20 literature, the injectors are Bosch HDEV5.2 Solenoid valve types as used in the N55.

Cheers. What are the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder diesel engines using out of interest? N47 and N57. Solenoid too or are they still Piezo?

Also, what are the advantages of Solenoid over Piezo?

From what I understand about the 2 types of injectors, Piezos have been developed to 'act' like a solenoid injector and are slowly - maybe a little faster than that - replacing solenoids.

However, they are a little bulkier than solenoids but quieter, hence the fast tapping or clicking sound the N20 makes at idle, being the slightly noisy solenoids we hear. Also Piezo are less power draining and faster.

Therefore, with more advantages of Piezo over Solenoid, it is interesting why BMW chose Solenoids over Piezos. I suspect because they are a proven, high performance unit, suitable for up to 200 Bar pressure and are highly customisable in terms of spray angle, spray shape and flow rates. Also, as the N20 is so close in build to the N55, which uses the same injectors, why reinvent the injection system.

Also, no idea about diesel injectors as I really don't have any interest. I have the N20, so I researched it a little.

Very interesting, cheers for that! What with the emphasis on EfficientDynamics and reducing emissions, I would've thought the obvious choice are Piezo injectors. Must have their reasons I suppose though, like you mention, and perhaps cost too as the N20 is the same as the N55, albeit with two less cylinders, and they do seem to be looking at engine standardisation, what with the N13 being another cylinder down on the N20. Hmm!
