Clarkson ‘may leave Top Gear’

Clarkson ‘may leave Top Gear’
Nicola Woolcock

LONDON Jeremy Clarkson’s future with Top Gear was shrouded in confusion last night as the presenter dropped hints that he might leave the motoring programme.

The blunt-speaking frontman said the BBC show would not return for a new series in the summer. Writing in a national newspaper on Saturday, Clarkson said: “After last week’s Top Gear, the continuity announcer said the show would be back in the summer. “Can I just say, here and now, it won’t be.”

This was contradicted by the BBC, which said there was no doubt that the show would return with its original presenters — Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

A spokesman said: “ Top Gear will come back. A summer special is planned and Top Gear will return in the autumn.” Clarkson was not available to comment.

I'm not sure what the industries obsession with him is. Sure, he's a "straight talker", but I'd say most of his opinions are at odds with the average enthusiast. Well, that is unless every enthusiast hates Porsche.

He's not deadpan serious when he makes his comments...he just fluffs it up to sound good in print and on film. And sure he slings some mud on some marks...but lots of people do that.

I like him because he's passionate. I don't necessarily agree with his opinions...but at least he speaks his mind and shows that he cares to tell the audience what cars he likes and what he doesn't. That's more than you can say for ANY north american motoring show (unless the American version of Top Gear does take off).

All the North American motoring shows are lame...they use the same adjectives to describe all cars. "We liked the Toyota Yaris because of it's torquey engine..." 10 minutes later it will say the same thing about the Porsche. Too afraid to say anything negative about a car lest they piss off an advertiser. So as entertainment goes...Top Gear with Jezza is the best. It's not meant to be really informative about cars you would actually buy...but if I want to learn about that stuff, I'll do research myself and go for a test drive.

Yup, Top Gear is the best show on TV. It wouldn't survive without him so I assume it is a contractual move.

As an aside, whoever comes up with the incidental music for TG is an absolute genius. I watched the episode again where they painted their cars with 'NASCAR Sucks' etc and went driving through some southern state. While painting, the music played was from an old old BBC show called 'Vision On' which was a children's show that involved a lot of painting. Brilliant.

Another example was when May was setting up roadblocks so that they could repave a road. The music was from the old ATV soap 'Crossroads'.

I guess you had to be there

Ya, I definitely didn't mean to infer I like North American motoring shows. I just don't think Clarkson is anything special. He's mildly amusing, which I guess is good.

North American Shows are drivel

Do you guys remember when Top Gear stopped a review of a pink Nissan convertible?

You MUST respect that? (and wearing a paper bag on the head driving the pink beast through town).

Call a spade a spade......this will always endear me to Top Gear (and Clarkson / May / Hammond as presenters).

I would love to see Motorweek do a review where they actually said this car is a POS.

Motorweek is the worst motoring show in the frickin' world! Everytime I watch that show...(cuz my love for cars is that strong)...I wanna hurl.

That fat bald guy with a fake tan that introduces and does the voice overs is DAMN annoying.

Watching the show on mute is only marginally better. They often use the manufacturer's promo videos and don't shoot their own. Awwwww....sooooo awful! Soooo boring. Ugh.

I'd rather get handcuffed and fall down a flight of stairs.

clarkson just wants more money on his contract because he just ordered a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and his Ford GT probably screwed him over because it keeps breaking down

I've been asked by the BBC to take over from Clarkson, but I'm just not sure I want a job driving the most beautiful cars in the world around a race track all day..... it's a difficult one....

If he leaves, that's the end of Top Gear.

I don't see the problem here, Top Gear won't be back in the summer, but there will be a special in the summer. And then the show continues with a new season this autumn. btw I just LOVE IT, especially the Toyota Prius review!!!!
