2013 N55 Exhaust question
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forum, but I bought my 2013 135is last year in San Diego, California. I now live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, so I was wondering if California standards make car companies add extra cat's or mufflers that don't necessarily need to be there in the rest of the country, that would be ok to remove? Also, the car is on a lease, so I was wondering if anyone else has swapped out the stock exhaust for something with a little nicer sound that didn't mess with the warranty. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Guys!! |

Your "iS" should already have a Performance Exhaust(PE). It's one of the sweetest sounding exhaust out there! Doesn't your exhaust pop and gargle? ???

I do love the sound of it, but I guess I'm getting a little greedy and wanting a little more. I did do the "golf tee" mod, by just unplugging the sensor in the trunk, but I was just wondering if anyone was doing anything differently.

You could get a down-pipe if you want to go catless. But then technically you'd fail any emission test. I would get a high flow cat, like what AR sells. ~$800, it would make the exhaust sound even meaner. Read: LOUD!

OP, you shouldn't mess with perfection.... BMW spent millions perfecting your 135is's PE and PPK's snap, pop and burble in a secret underground German laboratory. If you think a backyard garage fabricator can make a better sound please give your PE to the nearest 1er forum member.

Congrats on joining the "is" club. I beleive the PE to be the best sounding exhaust as far as sound "roundness" goes. What did you think of the results of the "golf tee" mod? I was aware of the mod for the non PE systems, but didn't know there was one for ours. Disconnect some sort of actuator?

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the golf tee supposed to keep the exhaust flaps open at all times? With that said, doesn't the US version of the BMW PE not have said flaps = the golf tee mod is pointless.

That's what I was thinking. I know my exhaust sounds pretty mean at startup, I like it, but it quiets down after about 30 seconds. I am pretty sure this is a result of the valve timing and overlap. Anybody have some input?

Also why it's easier to get it to backfire when the engine is cold.
