Thoughts and recommendations?
Do yourself a favour: test drive both the 328dx Touring and either a 328ix Touring or the 2017 330ixT.

After driving the 328dxT and the 328ixT, I bought the diesel version and so glad that I did. The diesel sounds better and its torque feels far more powerful than the gas version, especially in urban driving situations. As for fuel efficiency, there is no comparison between the gas and the diesel engines, the latter being approximately 30% more fuel efficient.

The other must-have options, IMO, are the M Sport package with the Sport seats and the adaptive suspension.

Good luck with your next purchase/lease. If you lease, make sure you have a buy-out option. In three years time, diesel BMW wagons will be sought after cars !

Sport seats are now standard.

Choosing gas over diesel also makes available track handling package, which is something many engaged buyers pick over the more expensive and mostly non-functional m sport (not me - I got both).

I submitted the order today. Got the Sport Line w/ the rims. I wanted the M-Sport, but hard to justify the $3k price tag. My order wont go to production anytime soon so I have time to change my mind. What are people's thoughts on the Style-397 rims in terms of wear, ride, and durability to bumps? Part of me wants to go back to the stock 17"s just so the extra sidewall can absorb the road imperfections better.

Does anyone know if the Rosslyn plant builds F31s?

Already did. The 330ix didnt feel as responsive as the 328dx. I test drove the latter about 3 times across three different cars and it felt consistent with each test. The one time I test drove a 330ix, it didnt wow me.

How does the math work out on this? Doesnt BMW subsidize the residual on their leases, such that it's always better to turn it in than sell it? On my current car, my 39-month lease had a 59% residual ($28246). Current KBB value is $25,703 on a private-party sale at Very Good condition.

I love my diesel wagon and I say props to you for getting one. Bmw does not price them in any way to make them make any sense unless you want an AWD german diesel wagon, of which there is ecactly one on the market.

Every time I have a 328 loaner I am always disapointed. The fiancé's 335 is great fun and I wish the wagon came with the high output I6 as an option.

Especially with the active sound, I find the 328 sounds better than the wife's 335 but actually has little behind the sound. The diesel makes no bones about the fact that it is a diesel, but even being the slowest 3er out there, keeping revs between 1.75k and 4k in sport mode, the torque is jolly good fun as the bits would say imo.

Plus the fact that I get 33 mpg in it while I get 17 driving the same routes when I drive the 335 makes my smile every time I fill it up for less than regular here in San Diego.

1. Get the 328i and throw a piggyback tune on it

2. Never look back

By odd sheer luck, I had to bring my F30 in for service and got a diesel F31 as a loaner!

Sport Line w/ most of the options I wanted, plus about 5lbs of dog hair. The 18" 397 wheels do transmit a bit of road noise at speed, but otherwise provide a comfortable ride. The N47 engine though is a joy to use! It reminds me of my TDI and I mean that in a good way. There is a bit of diesel engine noise within the cabin, but I'm willing to live with it.

My 100+ miles of driving today averaged about 38.7 MPG on about 80% highway, most of it in LA traffic.

The feedback from my circle of friends on the wagon is actually getting funny:

I will pay you $25/month to NOT get the wagon. I'll pay you $100/month to get the Tesla

If you go F48 X1, you definitely need to make sure on the seats. Base seats were pretty bad in my opinion, I haven't tried the sport seats yet

330i wagon is pretty interesting to me, I'd go for that before the new X1. I think maybe I'm biased against the new X1 because I like my wife's E84 X135 a lot

While we are talking wagon unicorns, you should try to get a 6MT CTS-V wagon. THAT is the wagon to collect in my eyes...

How old are your friends? I can't find a reason to blame you for wanting an attractive, practical vehicle. Somehow having an off road SUV is "better" when one will never go off road? (I'm not saying that's what you want, just making an illustration.)

Nope. All F31s for the entire world are built in the Munich plant. I even saw one destined for China going down the line when I was touring it last month.

They are all in the 25-30 range, about the same as me (28).

I think they have a point about the wagon looking odd, but that is the least of my concerns. Although the $25/month subsidy for getting an X1 is quite attractive.

I was about that age when i got my F31 328xd, I was stop few time by people telling me that they like my car. When you get off and people look at you it is always the same face seem like they are expecting somebody older.

The Touring got a major advantage on 1st date if things heat up too quickly you can stop somewhere lower the back seat and have enough room...

I have an F30. I rode in a 2016 X1 back in July. Wow! The interior quality and touches the X1 has are amazing. I unlike a lot of people like my F30's interior. The X1's however is a very nice step above.

Really? How was it optioned? I had a premium pack '16 X1 loaner with base seats and was unimpressed

I didn't have the base seats, but did not have the updated nav. So I am really not sure.

I actually agree with this statement. The X1 I test drove had the Mocha Brown leather from the Luxury Package and I was impressed how BMW added stitched leather trim to the bottom half of the dash near the gear shiftier.

Hahaha think you need to get new friends.....

but in all honesty, F31 wagons is hands down one of the best looking sport wagons around. And real talk, babes dig the wagon. You know the back seat folds down flat and you can perfectly fit a double air mattress in there right??

Other reasons for wagon over X1:

-the back hatch window opens separately, which I find very convenient at times
-more mod options as it shares many parts as their sedan counterparts
-handles like a car...
-you'll be contributing to the demise of the BMW wagon if you get the X1. maybe you can save the next gen 3 series wagon if you get a F31.......

Replace the 328i with the 320i and then you can really ask yourself what the best choice is, cause the 328i is worlds apart from the 320d performance wise. The 320i is quicker than the 328d(320d), despite that magical diesel torque, cause it has better power to weight ratio. Sure, if you´re towing, the diesel is the better choice. But if u wanna tow AND have a fun car, then the 328i is the way to go! It delivers 350 Nm from bottom to the top, whereas the 320d has a 390 Nm-hump from around 2000-4000 rpm. The gasser is always more responsive, less lag (no lag) and yeah.. cheaper.
