Explain to me the significance of this...doesn't the 328i JB4 have only two maps as of now?

Actually map 1 is also around 270whp but it's designed for the 328 while map 5 is designed for the 320. The map that made 300whp was map 7 using E85 and the flex fuel connector. They have also added a Stage1 simulation to the Stage2 box.

Don't get too concerned with map numbering yet as I understand they are going to redo the numbers soon.

wow, this is looking too good to be true. If a tune can get 260+ whp out of the 320i, this might just be my next car. I can only imagine what a full exhaust system would add. That stock exhaust just screams restrictive to me.

Here's to hoping BMW doesn't decide to throw the B38 3cyl turbo into the 320i in a year or two and limit the tuning potential. I think that prototype engine is running something like 14 psi stock, and I cant imagine it taking much more boost.

How much boost was "Map 5"? The big questions still remain:

Quote:
1) Is the 320i engine the same as the 328i engine? Internals and all!?
2) Is the turbo the same as the 328i?

I doubt that everything is the same. It would make the cost of the 320i too expensive to make. Doesn't mean you can't tune it to make power I would just question the longevity of the engine. As wonderful as these piggyback units are they aren't exactly the most sofisticated way of tuning a car. Have these guys cracked open an engine? Have any mathematics been put into this? Or is it just trial and error being used?

BMS has tuned over 20,000 BMW engines since 2007 so they are pretty well experienced. I asked about the 320 vs. 328 internal differences and they were quick to comment that at this point they don't know for sure. So they are taking the tuning on the 320 end conservatively until they have a chance to better determine what if any differences exist between the pistons. They own an F30 335, F30 328, and F30 320, so they are well committed to the platform and ensuring you guys can make as much power as safely as possible.

They obtained photos of the 320 and 328 pistons and have confirmed they are different. The 320 pistons are higher compression but seem just as strong otherwise. There are some other details with the 320 Stage2 tuning on their forum.

so if it's 8 psi stock why can't you put 10 psi over stock and it will be 18 like tuned 28i ?

It just doesn't work that way. Due to the way the DME base fuel & timing maps are setup, and the higher compression, the highest you can go on the Stage1 tuning is probably around +5psi on good 93 octane fuel. So around 12psi. And Stage2 can go up to around 17psi currently. Compared to 20psi tuned on the 328i. But the 320i actually doesn't make that much less power tuned despite the lower boost levels due to its higher compression and timing advance.

THere's gotta be some difference between the 320 and 328 engine....

Else why will there be this note / difference on the JB4 stage 2 for them?

Quote:
Those with a 320i/520i may only use map 5. Maps 1, 2, & 7 will cause the motor to run lean, knock, and other unpleasantness. Due to the lower factory boost targets in the 320i/520i they also require both the FlexFuel connector ($25) and an O2 sensor connector ($50) for proper fueling. Email us for additional information as needed.
20s will just run may 1 / 2 if they are the same as the 28s.

So for 320i is just map 5 (stage 1)? The installation is default, or do I need anything else?

Thanks!

+1 !

I am looking for guidance - I'd like to do stage 2 on the 320i if it's available, but want to know what I need to buy...

What electronics are required to properly run N20 engine into an older BMW? Like N20 to E30 engine swap?

So what is the stage 2 (non-Beta) putting out on the 320i's?

There is no "no beta"stage 2. I believe it will come out of beta once they crack the DME and can control the electronic waste gate.
