LCI F31 tailgate no longer soft closing
As per the title, it now just slams shut quite firmly.
If I manually lower it it will still soft close once the latch engages. Carly app logged a fault code relating to a short circuit in the tailgate wiring which I cleared but it still slams shut. Any ideas before I book it in under warranty? |

Our company 330d GT had the same issue. BMW mobile assit came out and disconnected the battery. Apparently the tech guy touched the disconnected positive lead of the battery on the neg lead to clear the fault codes and all has been good.

Called the local Barons dealership to ask if there maybe a reset procedure & they were v keen to book it in under warranty as it's occured on quite a few recently & usually needs a new sensor in the mechanism. So I have it booked in with a loaner. They can update the HVAC software at the same time to stop the frequent blasts of freezing cold air mentioned in a thread a few weeks ago.
Thanks for the info creepy, I may as well let them sort it & I pass their workshop on my way to work so it's not really putting me out to take it there. |

I've noticed mine sometimes doesn't soft shut and then the next day it will be fine. Something to add to the list for when it next goes in to the dealer.

Is "soft close" a LCI feature? I have power tailgate but BMW claim I don't have the feature.

I showed them that it slams shut when facing up-hill and soft closes when facing downhill.
The service manager then said - "oh yeah, it's not an 'option', but the car will decide when to soft close or not" Anyone have any opinion on that, or have an official response from BMW? My concern is that it may not be locking when it slams.

I recall having the same issue with mine not long after I brought it so I ordered a new soft close motor from the dealer. Its quite easy to access from the lower left side of the boot. A new motor solved the problem but curiosity got the better of me so I opened up the old motor to investigate. It transpired the Bowden cable which connects the latch to the motor had simply come unhooked inside, so I popped it back on and now have a spare in the garage. It could well be as simple as this.

I took my G31 to the stealers as has the same issue, after re initialising software (as they said) told me all is fine. Crock of poo... it's the same as it was when I took it in just doesn't soft close.
I took it back now they say it needs new struts under warranty, I'm not sure as it's only the glass rear window that has a gas strut on the 5 series (which all works fine) and the tailgate is operated by 'sprung spindle drives'. Downside of which is that they have to remove the complete headlining / rear trim and everything that is fixed to it to do the job. I can envisage some creaky trim and scuffs coming!! Time for a little more investigation first me thinks |
