LCI (or Mid-life Refresh, Mid-Life Kicker as I've heard it more commonly called outside of BMW) is always just a round of changes thrown in at the middle of the development cycle by all automakers. So usually that's 3 years into a model since most models are around 5/6 years.
That's not to say other changes won't trickle in each year, especially just with model year changes and all the technology that goes into the cars. Either way, the changes are usually pretty subtle and they're always happening, and if you wait for the last model year when things are the most stable, then you'll be sad when the new model comes out in a year. ;-)

Mate you'll always face this. Just take joy in what you have rather than chase an eternally moving goal is my advice.

This is the correct attitude. Its just like buying a laptop or tablet or cell phone in that progress never stops. The same applies to cars but at a lower frequency. Just buy the here and now and enjoy it and be happy with it.

Well the F30 has already undergone changes from MY2012 to MY2013 and another upgrade in November. I imagine lots of changes throughout its 7 year life, so a mid life LCI may not be such a big deal any longer.

Except that LCI includes styling changes as well. The 2009 LCI for the E90 gave it new taillights, new hood, front fascia and outside mirrors. The interior and electronic changes were minimal.

Noooo. LEDs are brash and "bling". Do you want your stylish 3 series to look like a pimped Audi? I hate the Audi "Gangsta" look and LED running lights are like Harry Potter: they're a bandwagon that's best missed.
The current Xenons look really classy

Ooooh I C
That just makes a lot of sense. Having LED light clusters means lower power consumption and stuff which is supposed to be their mantra

Honestly, I was thinking about changing my e90 for the F30, then I saw it and drove it a few weeks ago... My conclusion I will wait for the F30N or LCI... the front is just hideous!... there is something about it that bothers me, I have not yet been able to put my finger on it yet.... dont know if its the hood or the lights... but oh well this is just my opinion, I just wanted to share it to see if someone else feels the same way.

I didn't like the front of the F30 at first either, especially not on photos. But I didn't think the E90 looked nice at first either. You learn to love it, and now just a few months after the release of the F30 the E9x-series looks so dated it is almost ridiculous.

I think the 4th model year is the LCI (exterior styling changes), so 2012 was first model year (late 2011 release) except the official LCI in late 2014 as a 2015 model. Remember BMW does 7 year cycles (4 years under original concept, 3 years of LCI).
so if you want the newest freshest design of the 3 series you have 2 more years to wait... as someone else said, NEVER wait for technology and improvements unless its something you have to have and you know when exactly its coming out (like i waited for the Xdrive and M sport on the F30). If you are just waiting because you think there maybe some cool new features or looks but have no clue what, thats not a good reason... |
