Hi guys. I've looked far and wide, but it seems no one has attempted this. I was looking to see how feasible it is to buy the M1 and M2 buttons and install them where the blanks currently sit. Pics of buttons below
EDIT: Buttons installed! And they definitely press like the others. But have not doen any wiring. So for now they just look cool.

Obviously you would need the M-Sport wheel WITHOUT the active cruise control. Reason i ask is if i can get the button cover to physically press like the rest than I could theoretically sauder into the circuit board behind the bottons and wire that to a remote that controls an aftermarket exhaust valve or meth kit.

If u have ideas or have seen someone already attempt this please share.

Cheers

I have thought about doing the same thing, and have looked up what it would cost to buy a spare set of M Sport buttons to cut up and rewire. I'm pretty sure at this point that cutting and rewiring won't be necessary. From the look of the pinouts it should be as simple as popping off the blanks, put in the M buttons, then attempt to tap the LIN port off the steering wheel controller or just tap the CAN BUS of the steering controller. CAN bus would give you more info, but LIN bus guarantees you that the signal absolutely coming from the steering wheel buttons.

Gotta be honest dome of that sounded like Mandarin to me. But i took apart the wheel/button assembly today and you are right. Putting in the M buttons would be as simple as popping out the blanks and clipping in the buttons.

I see what you mean as well with regard to the signal and power wires coming out of the circuit board. Do you happen to know with ones are lin bus and witch ones are can bus?

Good news is the M buttons can be used to replace the blank buttons! Next step is to attempt to sauder into the circuit board behind the buttons

Looks good. Just a pedantic note, I think the word you're looking for here is "Solder". Good luck!

curious to follow this. I'm trying to figure out how to read the button presses coming from these, as well as a few things on the idrive controller. I have access to a CAN feed (tapped into CAN H and CAN L) but am having a tough time parsing the packets. Anyone know where I should go to start looking?

I'm hoping to introduce an outside circuit into the stem to control components that aren't oem. Could u elaborate a bit on the CAN access?

That's next level. Not entirely sure how u could do that yet. Aiming for the meth and exhaust cutout control first

Indeed. That would be ideal, one press of the thumb to take you into SPORT without taking your hand off the wheel.

Or even replicating the function of the Driving Experience rocker on the Steering wheel would be a step forward for non-M cars. So the top blank for modes toward Sport and Sport + and the bottoms blank toward Comfort and Eco Pro. Almost running the buttons in parallel with the Driving Experience rocker.
Could that be possible?

If you have adaptive cruise control, those are the buttons to adjust closer/farther following distance.

Correct. In that case this wouldn't work for you

Anything is "possible", but unless you can run a cable all the way to the rocker switch (not ideal) you'd need to run a wireless setup. Probably along the lines of what i want to do with the cutout/meth.
This is the remote/relay setup I'm going with.

I think it would, but would need more than just replacing buttons.

Finding which cable does activate the drive modus up or down for instance.

You could probably replace the stock buttons with M buttons, but that would seem silly.

I wonder if the wiring for ACC is there in cars without it... kind of like the rear fog light switch you can enable by breaking a couple of tabs. That might make it easier to tap into existing wiring and use it for another purpose, instead of running wires as some have suggested.
