Car ate Key

Key fob in right hand.

Jump back in car to adjust parking between the lines.

Fob slips out of hand, bounces off foot onto floor of driver's seat.

Get out of car, search for 20 minutes. No fob. Move seats a the way up, all the way back. Nothing. Car cranks fine, IT KNOWS the fob is still in the car.

There is an air vent in the floor under the seat. Flashlight shows nothing lodged. But, opening is perfect size for the fob.

Seriously, did this just happen??

Apologize about the comment but the story is entertaining in a good way. I'd try parking on the downward slope, might help the fob to slide towards the opening

If you lock your car with your alternate fob, the key fob inside your car will become delisted. Thus, the car will no longer rely upon it for authentication.

Now, this is not a perfect science for long term reliance. However, it was designed for when you lock your wife's purse in the car (with the key in the purse).

Thinking of inventing a cover for the heater outlet under the seats, do you think it's worth it?? :

My inlaws lost a memory card that way, never to be seen again... Of course the memory card was the size of a pinky nail...

So how do you make it active again? Bring to dealer to charge an arm and a leg for it to work again? Hehe

Hop in and gently get up to speed - then jump on the brakes. Problem solved.

Oh, and check your pockets.

Hmm you could find an empty parking lot and do some slaloming, hard braking and acceleration to try to jiggle it free from its confines. Just think you're at autocross, and if it doesn't work at least you had fun while trying !

Send in a 3 year old with a miners light. They'll find everything. Just take it before they try to eat it.

The same thing just happened to me .... sort of. My son dropped a Reese's peanut butter cup while he was a passenger in the front seat. I saw it drop, so did he. He could not find it so I looked for it. Nothing, nowhere to be found. Then I noticed the vent (?) under the seat and sure enough it was in there. I used my car vac to suck it out, otherwise it would have been impossible without taking the seat out of the car!

What about a thin wire coat hanger with a "J" bent at the end. That'd give you at least 18" of reach. Then you kinda fish it out. Once you can see it, use double-sided tape to stick it. Let us know how you get it out.

OP, did you ever find it, lol?

Honestly, I'm sure a flash light was all you needed, those interiors are so dark, and with the winter sun...

Wow this thread had a more rousing discussion than my Delivery Pics thread!

So... my wife solved this riddle.

The key was literally wedged completely out of view behind the yellow controller box under the seat. Could not see it from either the front or the back. But even before she found it, I tested the size of my spare fob against that floor vent opening. There is enough room, but you'd have to push it in. Would not slide in by itself.

Man I was losing my mind, then lost it again when she handed me the "missing" fob.

Now all that said... eventually my kids will be old enough to be playing with all sorts of stuff in the back seat. It does seem ridiculous for that vent to eat up action figures, candy, loose change, etc. Short-sighted design?

Glad you found it.

The vent can't really eat much, because if something goes in there, you can pop off the trim piece and see that stuff dropped down there really can't go very far.
