Purchasing insurance for an ED

This is my first time doing ED, picking up in April.
proof of insurance is required when finalizing the finance papers, but how does this work with ED, since I won't have the car for a few months after signing the papers (also doing PCD)

Do I just eat the cost of insurance for those months that the car is on a boat/waiting for pickup?

I didn't, i explained this ahead of time to the lender and they agreed that since the car was insured by BMW (allied I think) it wasn't nessesary but they did call BMW to verify this. I just had to make sure the car was insured when i picked it up.

Same here. The requirement should be proof of insurance for US redelivery, NOT Munich delivery.

Thanks for the responses. that's what I figured, my CA was asking for valid insurance to complete some paperwork.

I brought up the fact that I won't be insuring the ED car until delivery stateside, and he said he just needs a copy of my existing ins policy, which I think is strange because what does my current car policy have to do with the car on order.

This. Allianz was the insurer while on ED.

While on ED, the insurance is taken care by BMW through Allianz.

You just need to make sure and your dealer want to make sure you will have your own insurance covering the car at redelivery.

The reason they are asking for your current insurance is because, understandably there is no way no how anyone can get insurance, and certainly the insurance cannot insure a car that doesn't exist yet.

Your proof of current insurance will serve the purpose that you will, based on assumption, will do the necessary to transfer to the new car once you have the VIN.

Actually many insurance policies have a provision for the interim period of time in between the car changing hands. I had a demo S1000rr for a day and my insurance had me covered for that period without me having to do anything.
