Changing your order - 340i -> 335d

I've seen on here people have amended specs on new car orders until the order is finalised. What if you want to change the engine?! Is that a simple swap or would the existing order need to be cancelled for a new one? I realise there will be a price difference.

I've ordered a 340i touring to replace my 335d saloon but am having serious second thoughts after having a 440i for the day today.

I'm just wondering if its an easy swap for the dealer or if I'll be relying on their goodwill?

Thanks.

Your dealer should be able to do something. Even if your original order is too far down the line to change they are bound to have a stock order 335d that could be amended to your spec.

What happened? What put you off the 440i?

Basically mpg and power delivery. I drove the 440i today as I would my 335d and it returned 25 mpg. If my new one did that long term I know I'd hate the thing. Then when I started thinking about it I realised I never think about mpg in the diesel. I don't think about saving fuel, lifting and coasting, anything like that. All of which crossed my mind today. My 335d does 38 mpg, dropping down to 25 is too big a drop.

I wanted to get a 340i because I want rwd and proper m-sport suspension again (I had a 330d before). Plus the twin pipes which are

Later on I had to go pick up the wife + kids (needed 5 seats) and I drove the 335d. I just prefer the way the power is delivered low down vs the petrol. I realise this contradicts most people on the forum!

I've not heard a peep from them since paying my £500 deposit two weeks ago. I was meant to approve the final spec before it went into production so hopefully there's a chance to change it.

I'd be chasing them up, 3/4 series are moving quite quickly at the moment, big push on for year end registrations.

You might be the first one on here to change a 340i order to a 335d

Does seem to be a common thing though with noticeably different power delivery!

When I had a 340 for a week while mine was in the garage I thought mine felt quicker, will get slated for this but I would rather have the 335d over the 340
Now m3 a different story but between them 2 the 335d all day

I wonder how my 320d performs down low compared to a 340i, considering its been remapped. 40i has 450nm right, I have 440nm?

It is super quick off the line.

I wouldnt go racing a 340i any time soon. Torque makes a car "feel" quicker. BHP actually makes it quicker.

Then it's a new order.

Totally different product for the dealer order. Different built slot etc.

Will not make a huge difference but I assume your 335d is well run in as opposed to the 440i? The x40i lump does get better mpg as it beds in.

As for prefering the way it drives did you enjoy reving the nuts of the 440i properly?!

Your car will sound like a bucket of bolts and the 340i will sound like heaven. And off the line you'd get mullered!

OP, I love petrol engines but as someone who does lots of miles and likes to drive fast (I only average 36mpg from my 335d), I too prefer the 35d engine for the same reasons as you outline. For day to day driving it's effortlessly quick and the mpg is reasonable. If I did less and it was a coupe then a 440i would be great, but to me a tourer is a workhorse type of car, and so the diesel torque suits it, and the xdrive too.

This is exactly why I've struggled to change mine to a 340i or even an M3.

Yes I'd love the sound, the handling, the excitement of a new car... but when all that wears off, I know I'll be regretting the fact I got out of probably the optimum car for me. At 18k miles p/a most of it to and from offices around the M25 - I already have the perfect car!

Good to see some love for diesel, this forum has been all about the 40i engine mainly for months.

Interesting read from people though.

My mpg was just under 40 on the 33D (30,000 miles) and now its just over 30 on the 440i (7,000 miles). So in the real world, I guess you will see a 25% drop.

As for power delivery, the 335D is immense and comes in right away, while with the 440i, there is a lag while the revs build up. Thus the 335D is probably faster while the 440i is actually more fun and makes a better noise.

I don't really worry too much about the mpg but I think I will go petrol again next time too.

My F31 335d also averages 38mpg and I used to get just over 30 out of my E92 335i in the same conditions. A 340i should be several mpg better than a 335i so all other things being equal I'd be very surprised if a 340i would be 13mpg worse than your 335d; not sure what your expectation is but 5 or 6mpg worse is more likely IMO.

I do agree the 335d has effortless go but I wouldn't have thought a 340i would be lacking in that department; will need to rev higher to get the same on-road effect but not really a hardship in a nice sounding 6-pot petrol! However, if you prefer the power delivery of the diesel perhaps you need to stick with it; not exactly a hardship either given the 35d is probably one of the best oil burners on the market!

I know where you are coming from alarustic. drove a 440i with the performance pack two weeks ago and was a bit dissapointed with the get up and go of it. I wasn't worried about MPG. Just a word of caution. There is a larger support from BMW on the 340i than the 335d. They're trying to shift more big petrol models. Plus the 335d might be a couple of grand more expensive. I know that's the case with the 4 series.

How much HP did you gain by remapping that 2 litre engine? I'd be interested to do that if it doesn't cost too much.
