From RFT to non-RFT
Did anyone go from RFT to non-RFT on the BMW F30? Please let me know how the car feels.
Did the handling improve? My car bounces/wobbles on my 19 inch with RFT. Did the road noise decrease? Did you end up buying a tire repair kit? If yes, please recommend one. I have the OEM Bridgestone RFT and planning to switch to one of the following non-RFT (still deciding): 1. Michelin Pilot Super Sport 2. Continental ExtremeContact DW Thank you!

In my experience, YES. I'm sure this will be a fairly common response. Did the road noise decrease? Also, YES. The stiffer/harder sidewall of RFTs really don't do much for ride comfort/noise. Did you end up buying a tire repair kit? If yes, please recommend one. No, because AAA. Hopefully another forum member can provide more insight. It would definitely be a smart investment. The Michelin PSS, in most eyes, is known as the best street summer performance tire. Personally, I've had nothing but positive experiences with it. The Continental DW would be a close 2nd/3rd to the PSS (also consider Bridgestone S04 Pole Position). ^ With either of these options you should find much better dry grip as well as decreased road noise vs the RFT.

In my experience, YES. I'm sure this will be a fairly common response. I also upsized my tires when I went to the Michelin Pilot SS. Did the road noise decrease? Also, YES. The stiffer/harder sidewall of RFTs really don't do much for ride comfort/noise. Did you end up buying a tire repair kit? If yes, please recommend one. Yes, bought a Slime kit and a plug repair kit and BMW Assist is still active. |

Same for me as those who answered above. I actually went to 20" wheels with regular tires from the 19" OEM RFT and found the ride comfort improved.
Go for it and don't look back.

AAA has a duty to put your spare tire on your car when you have a flat. If you don't have a spare, they are under no obligation to repair your tire or chase around town looking for a tire repair shop. Pull out your map and look at HWY 212 in southern Montana. I drove that route last summer from Little Big Horn to Spearfish, SD. It's a three hour drive and there is very little cell coverage along the route. Even with my RF tires, I tossed in a space saver spare and purchased a BMW jack set. I don't care to be left to the mercy of someone else. Think about Sundays, also. Few places are open. If you're close to home, fine. If not, you're on your own.
I purchased my tire and jack kit from www.bimmerzone.com. The jack kit is nice. It includes a torque wrench. Last edited by 328_Diesel; 06-10-2015 at 09:37 PM.. Reason: typoes |

What inflators are people using they'd recommend? I was originally going to get a slime kit but hanged my mind after reading multiple threads saying that slime will make it hard to patch and you then essentially always have to get a new time (vs just getting a plug).

It will temporarily mess them up. I had a tire with a slow leak, used Slime, the TPMS stopped working for a few weeks but eventually worked again.

Thanks everyone, I plan to upgrade to Michelin Pilot Super Sport.
Also, I really don't want to mess up the TPMS or hassle with it. I might try another repair kit.

I find it slightly amusing that BMW makes us buy this ourselves. On my parents' Q5, a compressor was included in the trunk from the factory and the car has a neat little spot to keep it hidden and tidy. It came with a compact spare too.

BMW cars used to have them standard/factory. I don't know when these were removed. I remember having them with my 2008 Z4 and 2010 335i, glad that I kept a set after traded in the car to BMW.

Affirmative to all three questions. I tossed the Bridgestone RFTs for a set of Michelin PSS. Usually, new tyres always feel better because the old has very little tread left. Not so in my case. I had at least 5mm left on the front and 4mm on the rears. Yet the difference was dramatic. I should have done it sooner.
I bought a BMW mobility kit for peace of mind.

Update: the switch to PSS is a night and day difference and I'm so glad I did it this early.
- less road noise - less tram lining on highway - smoother feel on bumps on the road. Much less "skipping" I'd feel with the RFTs |
