Noisy engine at start normal?

This is my first BMW, but it seems that when you first start a cold engine, it idles kinda loud.....like rough. It seems to smooth out after awhile. Never had a turbo before, but did anyone else notice that this engine is kinda noisy at start up??

It is normal. It sounds a bit like a diesel because of the direct injection design. Definitely not as refined as the inline six of years past.

cold start ppl might think your car is broken with the recirculating metallic rattle of the waste gate the first half a minute or so, sounds a bit clattery diesel like as well

It does sound a lot like a diesel. Definitely quiets down when warm though

two things are happening.

One - when the car first starts the exhaust is wide open to dump as much heat into the cats as possible to get them up to operating temp. Its a scheme to reduce emissions.

Two - DI engines have this diesel sound because its the same thing causing it - high pressure fuel injectors. A multi-port fuel injector operates around 120 psi. A GDI injector is running around 2200 psi. Its also much more prevalent at idle than in other areas of the powerband.

It isnt a lack of refinement that causes the noise.

Should've bought a 335, sweet sound on start up. This alone made me choose 335 over 328. Can't stand the four banger sound no offence

So is that wastegate rattle normal on a cold start? Mine is pretty loud inside the garage on a cold start and lasts for a minute or so. I learned to live with it but I was never quite sure if it is normal or not.

Have never noticed any noise at cold start.
Now I'm worried if something is wrong with my ears.
