What kind of after market navigation for F30 without BMW navigation?

For those that have the standard 6.5" IDRIVE screen with no navigation system what specific aftermarket navigation system do you have (magellan, garmin, or tomtom)? Where are you mounting it in your car? Where do you keep it when not in use? Any pictures would be greatly appreciated!

I debated whether to get the BMW navigation system but it is part of a $4,600 package in Canada and I didn't think the amount of use I would get out of the package was worth the extra cost.....

Garmin

Just buy a Garmin with lifetime map and traffic updates. You can get them with a lot of features such as bluetooth, live traffic updates. Plus you can buy a hell of a good one and spend some money and not come near the price of a nav system. After you get it, go to a company called Pro Clip. Buy a mount for your dash and the attatchment for your device. Look on the website and enter your vehicle. They have pictures and directions on installation. Took me about five minutes and I am clueless when it comes to anything like that. I had one in my E90 and use them in all my other vehicles. I've had a lot of trouble with my Nav system calculating turns and distances. My dealer is going to spring for the update. For now, I just use my Garmin. Hasn't got me lost yet. Took it to Arizona to visit my son who is in the Army. Put it in the rental car. The directions were good enough it took me right to the entrance of his company barracks.

My Garmin Nuvi has now made it thru 3 BMWs. Love it. Just can't justify the asking price for the Nav that BMW offers.

Thanks for all the information everyone, it is greatly appreciated

I don't use a GPS very often, maybe only once a month or so at the most so I am not sure if I will need the separate mount (though it does look like a nice fit). To keep the dash looking clean, is it easy to un-clip and take the mount off the dash when not in use? I am also worried about marking up and scratching my new baby, is it easy to scratch the wood and aluminum in the car where the mount clips on the dash?

As another option, I was thinking of just sitting or mounting or placing the GPS on the cover that goes over the front cup holders. Has anyone tried that? I thought it would be a good spot because it would sit just in front of the power charger in the cigarette lighter....it is a bit low though, but as I said I would only use it about only once a month. I wonder if the suction on the GPS unit would stick on the rubber of the cover that covers the front cup holders?

might want to look at Kuda USA for mounts. They're made in Germany....leather-wrapped fiberglass designs that clip on. $66 for the base (you screw whatever mount you want to that).

Here's one for a NAV for the F30:

Basically, "enhanced BT" is BMWs way of saying they add the A2DP profile which is stereo audio streaming over BT.

In the US, I believe Enhanced BT comes with BMW Assist.

Google it for more details.

I just tried using Google maps on my Samsung Galaxy 2 phone and it works great.....much better and more accurate than my 5 year old TomTom. The 4.5" screen of the Samsung phone is also very easy to read......I also found that there is a recessed lip in front of the 6" Idrive screen that I can place my Samsung Galaxy phone in so it sits securely in front of the Idrive screen and is in the same spot as the BMW navigation screen

Thanks for everyone's help!

I have an older Magellan, 4 or 5yrs old and I love it for when I need it, which is not too often. That's why I didn't get the overly priced NAV. It's just not worth it to me. When I need nav I mount my Magellan right under my rear view mirror. It does create a small blind spot, but since I know it's there I know to work around it. I haven't updated the maps since I bought it, but I've never gone anywhere that the Magellan didn't know how to get to.

I do want to get a new one though with a larger screen.
I really like the mount shown in the post above that's made in Germany.
Great looking mount and it's in a great location too.
Gonna look into it.
Thanks.

Have you considered an OEM navigation system retrofit? It goes for about 1/2 the price.

I am using Akron GN033-G goose neck cup holders with garmin holder cradle. I used heat gun to adjust holder cradle size to fit my droid. You can adjust for any phone.Name: 971x768.jpg

Why don't you just put your phone navigation unit in front of the non navigation Idrive screen?.....there is a recessed ledge that holds the phone in place and it is more in line with your sight when you are driving.

Sorry, spacemanrick but I wouldn't place it there because it will go flying at stops or turns.

I used my iPhone as a nav device that way in a pinch but its not ideal in the least for the long haul.

You are probably right, I use my phone for GPS rarely and only if I have to......I do have to make sure that I am not cornering too hard when I have it on the IDRIVE screen

I was so excited and overwhelmed during my first BMW car puchase and somehow I missed opportunity to have factory built Apple Carplay in my 2017 BMW 330i. Can you guys help me with finding best option to get Apple Carplay aftermarket? I can try DIY but, I am new to BMW and have no idea what I need to add this compatibility. I have Navigation System though.

You can install a multimedia interface (MMI) unit, which supports HDMI/RCA inputs. See BimmerTech's SmarView which enables you to mirror the screen of any Android/iOS device right into your iDrive screen.

Have you checked the ConnectedDrive store? You may be able to just order it from there but I'm not sure if it's available just yet.
