Yeah, I agree - but look at all the old transit vans around, that belch out black smoke every time they move. Most of them must pass the MOT without a DPF. Even after DPF removal, I'm sure a modern BMW diesel engine would produce less smoke than that.

Brilliant write up and very insightful as I'm considering a tuning box for my LCI 318d. I was just wondering how these affect BMW warranty and if the dealers can check if a tuning box has been used?

As long as the unit is removed before heading to your dealer you will have no issues

Hi Paul do you have any updates as I've been running this box bit I'm after the best map
for fuel economy and before people ask I bought the car with the box so that's why I'm more interested in better mpg as the car is plenty fast without extra power.
Also I didn't get any instructions on the box although I do know how to change the map
I'm not noticing any of the leds lighting up could you tell me when they are suppose to be on.

I would've thought best economy would be found with the box off, after all BMW probably spent millions of pounds searching for the optimum balance of power / economy so I doubt the simple addition of a tuning box would improve this!

In my past experience when you remap a car and drive it normally ie not booting everywhere
you tend to get better fuel economy more so in a diesel.
The theory behind it is you don't have to accelerate as much as there is more available power
hence why you don't use as much fuel and it really does work.

I had the CRD2 and the results were very impressive with much more power and improved fuel economy but the reality was a screwed up mpg read out. When I checked over a period there really wasn't any improvement.

I then went for a BSR remap and the result was a big power gain but in a much more user friendlier way - again no mpg improvement when checked over a time period.

I'm still of the opinion that if manufacturers could get more power &/or mpg from a simple tweak they'd do it themselves and shout about it from the rooftops!

TBH I tried all the available maps and the fuel economy was pretty much unchanged - the BC reads a higher mpg but that's skewed bacuse of the box. Brim to brim calculations show the same consumption I was getting before fitting it.

The LEDs only light up during driving - you won't see them.

Agree with all of this. As I said in my OP, I've run boxes and remaps before, but with the threat of the new MOT regs clamping down on remaps I thought I'd play it safe. As it happens, that was a load of tosh, so it wouldn't have mattered either way but I'm happy with the box

Manufacturers could easily get these power increases, but they need to supply a car that will work across the world, and reliably run in the worst possible scenarios - I'm talking cheap nasty fuel, dirty air, extreme temperatures etc.

3 times in the last 3 days my EML has come on under acceleration Once with a cold engine, twice with it warm. Each time it's cleared as soon as I've turned the engine off and on again so hopefully nothing serious but I think I'm going to have to take this back down to +10% and see how it goes.

Hi, Paul can you please tell me where exactly you are placing the jumpers to suit your driving style to or which is map 3 as I have CRD-T on my BMW 335d and can't figure out the maps. Right now I have been running on both black jumpers on left and one jumper on number 6 and I'm only getting 22.6 mpg. It would appreciated if you could help.

Give me till morning, I'll take a picture. I've only gone by the instructions included with the box though - if you haven't got those you can get them on the DTUK website.

Hi, I do have instructions, it's just that I don't understand, where to put the jumpers and at the moment, I got two jumpers on left on vertical position and the right I have one jumper vertical 6th rail.

No worries - I'm at work all night, when I get home in the morning I'll take a pic and get it up.

I would appreciate very much, if you will. By the way just a quick one, have you ever had a problem with your red flexi hose (charge air line) oil leak on the front of the car, which the BMW 335d have common problem with.

No, no problems here - not sure if the 330d has one or not though...

Sorry pal, thought you were driving 335d for some reason. Either way, let me know about your map, my car is running way to rich with this cheap.

EML not good dude. has it come back on since down to +10?

Never seen a warning light with remaps.

Funny enough, I completely forgot to turn it down - and also forgot those pictures for the other guy.

No EML since putting the summer tyres back on, I'm wondering if the power restriction by the TC combined with the overfuelling and overboosting by the box just confused one of the sensors somewhere.

I'll keep an eye on it and see. It's only a 5 minute job to change it, so no big deal if it happens again.
