This has had me scratching my head for awhile. I have taken the car to the dealer, they said that there is no issue. Meanwhile, in the loaner 328 I was provided it did not present this issue,

Anytime I cold start the car with the AC on. I hear an intermittent whirring or breathing noise coming from the vents. It sounds almost like a second fan is kicking in and out for a few seconds at a time. The sound vanishes as the car warms up.

Does anyone know what this is,?

I suspect you have a noisy exterior air vent motor. Next time you turn your car off (completely off), wait for a bit and see if you hear the recirculation vent door closing. It has to open again the next time you start, of course.
