This is my third BMW addition to my garage (2009 328i and 2015 X1) but my first BMW euro delivery; we are excited because we are planning a family vacation to enjoy the scenery and driving the new acquisition in Germany, Switzerland, and France (Paris is the drop-off location). I have scheduled the delivery date for 03/19/2016 (below the configuration) and we will post pictures of our journey: 328i Sedan non-Metallic B39 - Mineral Grey Metallic 4FW - Burl Walnut Wood Trim with Pearl Gloss Chrome highlight KCSW - Black SensaTec ZDA - Driver Assistance Package 3AG Rear view camera 508 Park Distance Control ZPP - Premium Package ZLP - Lighting Package 552 Adaptive Full LED Lights 5AC Automatic high beams ZTR - Track Handling Package Do I need to use winter tires during that period? Thanks for your answers and tips. Jose |

It is mandatory to use winter tires during the winter months in Germany (Dec-Feb) and Austria (Nov-Apr 15). I wouldn't risk driving up any alpine passes without winter tires. Best to check with your SA and/or the delivery specialist once you get there. I did my ED with another manufacture and they offer winter tires for customers who choose to pick up their cars during winter months.

There are no set dates for mandatory use of winter (or all-season with M+S symbol) tires in Germany. It is advised from October through the end of March, but mandatory only on days with snow or ice on the ground.
If caught with summer tires on snowy/icy days the fine varies from 60-80 euros, and if summer tires are the cause of a crash on such a day insurance may partially or completely decline coverage. I have this information from the ADAC website (German AAA). In Austria winter/all-season tires are mandatory between November 1st and April 15th. Winter/all-season tires are not mandatory in Switzerland, but they are advised in winter conditions and you can be fined if your summer tires cause a traffic disruption. In France winter/all-season tires are not mandatory. In all these countries winter tires or snow chains may be required on certain mountain roads if local signs indicate such. You could find snow late March in southern Germany and Switzerland, but since you're not planning to visit Austria you can probably play it by ear and only rent winter tires when a few weeks out the weather forecast indicates freezing conditions. You can also choose to forego winter tires and not use the car on days with inclement winter weather. |

It is recommended but keep your self updated on the weather, and you can always book the tires last min and you should be fine, i did a ed last year mid feb and there no snow to be found anywhere.

BMW has a webpage on this, and there are multiple vendors that rent winter tires.
