8 plastic rivets and VHB Tape enough to hold up lip?

hey guys i got a f32 with the m sport bumper. the bottom of the bumper has 8 holes for a front lip. i purchased a rieger lip but it came with self tapping screws. I dont wanna drill into the bumper so im looking to do 8 plastic expanding rivets by bmw and VHB double sided tape. Is that enough to hold the lip so it doesnt come flying off? The rieger lip has no holes in it so i have to drill 8 holes to match the m bumper. Im looking to do this, let me know if i need to change anything.

Parts:

BMW 51118174185 Plastic Expanding rivets
TapeCase VHB Double Sided 5952 (Converted from 3M) - was the only VHB I could find in Canada
3M 4298 Adhesion Promotor

1. The holes at the bottom of my bumper are 6mm I believe so I am going to take a 6mm drill bit and drill 8 6mm holes in the rieger lip to match the 8 holes in the bumper.
2. Clean bottom of bumper with water and soap and then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.
3. Use a light sandpaper to sand the bottom of the bumper for better adhesion.
4. Do the same to the lip if its possible to sand.
5. Wipe the bumper cover and lip with isopropyl again and make sure its dry.
6. Apply adhesion promotor to both bumper and lip, i think it says to let dry for 90 seconds. so Ill wait 90 seconds.
7. apply alot of VHB double sided tape on the rieger lip
8. stick the rieger lip to the bumper and make sure the holes line up.
9. probably put something there to hold the rieger lip stuck to the bumper.
10. use the 8 plastic bmw rivets and push them in
11. success??

is that all I have to do? should I change anything? Will it hold the lip in place?

Thanks guys!!

Look through threads I've started and you'll find a thorough review on the Magic Drift front lip I have. It is a polyurethane replica of the Reiger lip. I put it on with screws in the back and double sided tape in the front over a year ago and it's rock solid. Check out the thread for more specifics.

hey thanks for the reply. i read your post and you said something about fasteners? are the holes at the bottom of the bumper kinda like a bolt?
or did you have to use self threading screws? hhaha i got a little confused.

also what do you guys think of zip tying the whole lip to the bumper? I am thinking it should works as long as I can reach the zip tie from the back and fasten it up. I feel like that will hold better then anything else?

what im thinking now is.

1. put a zip tie thru the hole in the lip and through the hole bumper and then fasten them together from underneath and thru the back. I would do this 8 times

anyone have insight?

thanks

The double sided tape is incredibly strong. If something is going to knock the lip off with just the screws and tape in place, nothing short of bolting it to the car will help. You're good.

thanks for the reply! what do you guys think of using alot of zip ties? if i dont use the expanding rivets i could use alot of zip ties cuz i could probably fit a couple in each hole. Zip ties are super strong i doubt they would break off. Why has no one ever done zip ties?? or i could do half and half. half rivets and half zip ties!

thanks!!

Remove the screws in the bottom of the bumper. Hold lip in place. Install longer screws. Double sided tape further forward. Simple as that. Zip ties aren't adequate.

Remove one of the bolts and take it to your local hardware store and get 8X of the next longer bolt in the same thread. Get 8X washers in the same size. Also be sure to get 3M automotive double sided tape made this application. Might need to order that online or go to a Autozone or equivalent.

Just did mine. Get the expanding rivets from the dealer p/n 51118174185. About a dollar each or can order a pack of 30 on Ebay for $5-$10. They hold well. I used VHB double sided tape from HD and the lip also came w/ 2 screws that go in the very center. There's about 10 c-clips that go onto the adapter so the screws do have something they're going into. Not sure if I like the zip tie idea, sounds mickey-moused.

zip ties dry out/crack over time...and it's kind of a 'mickey mouse' way to install something. Go with the tape, etc as others suggested.

makes sense thanks guys!!
i was thinking of doing 3m tape plus some plastic expanding rivets and some zip ties because i felt zip ties are super strong and basically impossible to pull apart while tape is just tape and i feel like over time the tape will wear down. if you know what i mean!

but if you guys think zip ties arent good then ill do rivets and 3m tape then!

hey guys!!

So i started today but im gonna finish it tonight. i purchased the next size screws but when i install them with the lip, there is still a gap when i tighten it.

I used the oem screws and they seem to work fine. is that ok? they seem to tighten up and hold it fine

secondly, im gonna use 8 screws and then a couple of the plastic expanding rivets with the 3m tape.
