*NooB ALERT* f30 Water Pump Question

Hey all, new-ish owner to BMW here, Picked up a used 2014 328i XDrive a few months back, been a great car, but today I noticed that when switching on the ignition, I hear the water pump going- a bit noisier than usual- but vigorously pumping back into the overflow tank- all this before actually starting the car- and only when I switch on the HVAC fan ( doesn't pump when the HVAC is completely off), Now, with the noise probably being the indicator that I'm going to go and have to switch this think out, but my question is...

Does the pump normally run like that when the ignition is in the on "position"(one press ) and only when the fan /HVAC are turned on? (Yes I know it runs as needed when running, I'm speaking of before it's even running)

I know this has probably been asked a thousand times, but hopefully someone who has better knowledge than me could help out a friend here!

Thanks All!
