OEM plugs are Bosch, with a BMW logo stamped on them (that adds 2x to the price due to the expensive ink )

Just find the Bosch P/N plug and use them. They are no better/worse than the rest.

So true. Take what one would estimate to fix the BMW and multiply by two or three.

Diesels use a glow plug that heats up and causes the engine to fire, gasoline engines use a spark plug to light it once per fire.

BMW specifies: Spark plug, High Power - BOSCH ZR5TPP33S, part # 12120037582. MSRP $22.74, but you can find them through BMW dealers with internet sales for ~$14.50.

You can find them online for ~$10 each. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZR5TPP33S-for-BMW-F01-F02-F07-F10-135i-335i-435i-550i-Spark-Plugs-Bosch-6-PC-/232131945510?hash=item360c246426:g8IAAOSwal5YGf5 O&vxp=mtr

The NGK 5992 (ILZKBR7A-8G) is, apparently, another option. BMW used NGKs in the E46s, and I've run them in my 2002s for 30+ years.

A plug fires on every ignition stroke. A glow plug is only necessary for the first revolution or so, then the firing is caused purely by compression. That's what makes a diesel a diesel.
For that matter a glow plug isn't a necessity, but with a cold engine it would take a lot longer to initially fire up, perhaps longer than the battery could provide cranking power in very cold weather.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Should have expanded on that. Diesels work by compressing air/fuel enough that it just ignites. Cold fuel sometimes needs help to ignite, so the glow plugs kick in for starting as a helper.
