I'm kinda bummed that the 6-cylinder is down on power compared to the last gen, but the fuel economy is probably even better.

And now with Audi bringing diesels to the US across their entire model range, BMW's confirmation of new diesels, and also Jeep and Ford introducing new diesels, it's a good time for the oil burners.

Compared to the engine in the 335d, it will have 10 less hp and 12 lb-ft less torque. Coupled with the 8 spd auto, it will have much better fuel economy.

and better acceleration - the 8 spd is a modern marvel as I have now logged 50k miles in my X3 35i with it; the diesel options plus the 8 spd is my dream come true

Sadly it won't be the next gen M5.

But the M3/4 will have a manual. So there is an option.

Yep, I will be seriously considering this 6 cylinder diesel engine for my next one in 3 years. This will be perfect, allowing them to get all the kinks worked out before I'm due again. I was about 2 seconds from ordering a 335d last year, but they changed EOP from October to August and missed it.

The torque in a BMW diesel engine launches the car like rocket.

- The 320d does have 50/50 weight distribution. much easier on a 4 cylinder, where even the diesel engine is lighter than a 6 cyl petrol, and the centre of gravity of the engine is further away from the front axle. That is why it corners fairly well.
- Turbolag.. Well obviously you never data logged it, I have. The 320d uses one of the most costly turbo technologies currently available, an electrically controlled variable geometry turbo. It does perform. You will have max boost from 1200rpm onwards, immediately, when you put your foot down. BMW will rather use the twin scroll in future as it is cheaper and similar in performance.
Sorry, you're right about the 50:50-number. I was thinking of my old car (1er i-model) which had close to 50:50, wheras its diesel counterpart didn't.

"8.6 is sky high" Like I said, I wasn't just driving "a few times at 220-240" but the pedal was _always_ on the floor. And I do mean _always_.

As for the other stuff. I don't know what you're talking about. "Turbolag" for me means: when I put my foot down at 1200rpm, absolutely nothing exciting happens (and I'm not the only one). Mine is from 2009, maybe you have the LCI? Then again, I don't think it differs that much.

much better - prob 25% better, given that the engine itself is also more efficient. Main reason we bought the 35i instead of the 35d was b/c I didn't want to get a diesel that was still running the 6AT.

Agreed. For a nominal difference in power, the 8at will totally makeup for the performance.

According to fueleconomy.gov, the F30 328i with 8 spd is rated at 26mpg combined while the E90 335d gets 27mpg combined. So using this reference point, you see that comparing the ECE test cycle numbers, the F30 330d gets 35% better city fuel economy, 21% better highway, and 29% better combined.

Impressive indeed...

Intriguing.
Indeed, what is intriguing is that it could be the full 381 HP or a detuned version of the engine. BMW are taking their new challenger very seriously in all corners of the market. Starting with the Euro-friendly X4 xDrive20d EfficientDynamics right up to the X4M. The people working on the X4 programme are some of the best engineers within BMW.
It is a very important car for BMW. and for the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina, USA in terms of growth.

It's probably a single (variable) turbo like the 30d, rather than a sequential turbo like the 35d motors. It'll be niiiice with the 8sp.

This wasn't leaked- a small group of journalists/media were told this at a press conference in Munich- The images of the slides have been up for days now. The info was leaked earlier in the Spring though.

Indicators point to the X1, X3, 3 Series, and MINI Countryman (as well as the outgoing X5) being offered with the diesels. "They will be used in models that sell well"

The will be launched in 12 months or so- but that may change depending on market conditions and homologation.
