So when will this speaker turn on?

SOS?
I think you are right, I believe it is for the SOS. It would make since that it has its own speaker (maybe backup speaker) in case for some reason you were in a bad enough crash that it messed up your regular audio system.

Cell phone calls with BT comes through the audio system.

The mic should be located above your head somewhere.
My 135i mic is up where the upper light console is.

Hands free calls using a mic and speakers in same environment use echo cancellation to avoid feedback.

BTW, I have no idea what that thing is
Looks much too big to be mic though.
And, it looks like a cheapy paper cone. Doesn't look something to reproduce hi-fi.

YUP looks like a those paper speakers that you used to see when you first learned to use a screw driver and pulled down your parents old radio. Yes that same small paper speaker.

When I was setting up the BMWAssist yesterday I noticed that audio seemed to be coming from down low on the drivers side so that make sense. My bluetooth audio quality sounds good and comes from the same speakers as the am/fm/iPod/etc...

It could be the navigation lady's speaker. She sounds like she's hiding under the dash, so that could be it. Now I have to go and test it!

How did your test go? I keep my Nav on mute and rely on the HUD.

All the navigation info comes from the main speakers...

It is for the SOS. I called to set up my BMW Assist today and the sound was coming out of that speaker. Its dedicated for the SOS button. It was very difficult to hear until SOS operator turned it up, since the volume controls are for your internal speakers.

Thats your RPA speaker. Reverse Park Aid. Usually theres one under the dash, and one somewhere in the package tray area.

Unless I'm crazy RPA isn't a thing. I think you mean PDC. And if it is PDC, PDC most certainly comes through the stereo. It's in fact in stereo, you hear which side of your car has a sensor triggered by which speaker the beep comes from.

It is where I work. It's called RPA reverse park aid.

Bmw calls it PDC...so on and so forth. But that OP picture looks like the BMW assist speaker now that I look at it, I noticed when I called them the call is faint and doesn't come through the regular car audio speakers. It comes from under the dash.

It's definitely a speaker. Judging by the location if it's part of the radio it probably only produces surround effects. There's no surround effect in a phone call, that could explain why you don't hear anything though it using the phone. OTOH:

That's a possibility. They might use a separate speaker for BMW Assist in case the radio is broken or stolen.

On older models there was a speaker there that the BMW chimes and noises came out of (I THINK)

SOS?
When the NSA activates it to eavesdrop.

Speaker for Active Sound, so the sound sounds like its coming from engine? ☺️
