All season/winter tires on the 19" 442M?

I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a 440i GC. Its got all options except the track handling package (I checked the adaptive suspension as part of the M-sport package) and the lighting package.

I picked the 19" 442M wheels but they come with Mixed performance tires. Being in Chicago, I will need to swap those out for a good set of winter tires or most preferably all season tires.

What tires would you guys suggest?

Conti DWS 06. They're the best all season for snow.

Thanks. Should I do a square setup or keep the staggered setup when swapping out with winter/all-season tires?

Since you have the sticky performance tires from the factory, I would recommend a full snow/winter set of wheels and tires. Switch out near Thanksgiving and around mid March weather permitting
Winter is best Square but ud be fine staggered

Your mixed perf tires are going to be run-flats. I'd swap them out for DWS06's (because runflats are ew) and then get a set of 17" or 18" winters. Reason for that is that I believe Chicago's unpredictability for snow is very similar to Boston.

This is my rationale for that setup - winter can hit all of a sudden (and it can also start snowing out of the blue even if it's not winter), and if you're anything like my situation I can't get my winter tires on till a few weeks after it's started snowing (everyone decides to change tires at the same time plus me being busy with work means very limited availability at the tire shop to do the changeover). That way you're not stuck with summers when it randomly snows, but then changeover to proper snows for the heavy-duty stuff. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious, but it snows for like 9 out of 12 months here, so...

Also, if you're expecting to change every season, get wheels and tires. Most shops I've seen will charge you for swapping out the tires on your wheels in addition to changing the wheels on your car - that'll add up.

Separate set of winter tires and wheels and a floor jack so you can switch them out on short notice on your own dime.

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with the Conti DWS 06. Can I use it all year round? I'm very bad at finding time to get my wheels/tires swapped out. I'm looking for a lazy way out.

Yup. DWS06's perform superbly in the winter, till they lose a certain amount of thread (but there's indicators on the tire so you know - when the S wears off it's not good for snow anymore)

Next question: what do you guys do when you have non-runflats on? Do you carry a spare wheel in the trunk?

OP, It's not clear in this post but is the car you're looking at an rear wheel drive or xdrive. All seasons should be fine for an xdrive, but I'd lean towards a winter set if its rwd.

In regards to preparation with non-runflats. I have just about everything and hope I never need to use anything. I have a patch kit, slime, air compressor, and a AAA membership to along with BMW service...and I'm not even putting my non-runflats on until october. You should be fine with less.

Dedicated winter wheels / tires set preserves your OEM wheels from possible damage when the tires are changed. It does happen. This also creates an option to change the wheels yourself. Good torque wrench is highly recommended to ensure the lug nuts are properly torqued.

I have a square Blizzak set-up from Tire Rack for the winter months.

Thanks for that image. I was wondering what to do with a spare. My issues with the slime + compressor is I've snagged a nail on a past car, it went through the face of the tire near the edge, hit the rim and curled out through the side wall. Tire was screwed, the slime couldn't seal it, so I put the spare on to get it home.

I realize that's a pretty unique situation, but it happens.

New York and Boston might fight you for that.
