Parts breaking in winter
Hello,
For research I have to find out which car parts are needed or break most often in the winter time. It could be a part like heaters or a product like windshield washer. If anyone has an idea let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. You could already assume it is for school! I need some insight on this subject. Thank you. |

Chicago winters have taught me the following when it comes to cars:
Seals can go due to the temp changes (as stated above), though I have yet to see any go on my end. Tires are another (mainly due to pot holes). Paint, undercarriage, fender lining can be damaged if you don't wash away the salt build up. Heaters in older cars tend to blow up if you try and go full blast when the car is still cold. Engine blocks can crack if you push too hard in cold climate without warming up completely. I've had windshields crack on me in extreme cold when full front defrost was applied plus a rock to the windshield. The windshield washer reservoir and lines can crack and burst if the fluid is watered down too much. I usually give it a spike of vodka (grey goose of course ). In the interior department, carpets can get f***** up from the road salt if you don't have floor mats and you don't clean during the winter time. If you writing a paper and need some legit sources, here are links to a few articles I wrote which may be of use: http://www.ohsolofty.com/cars/2015/1...ur-cold-engine http://www.ohsolofty.com/cars/2014/1...r-and-your-car Cheers -Aatish |

Only issue I've ever had in all the years of driving many different cars that could be at least remotely caused by winter was a damaged tire from a pothole.

4 years of MA weather here on a 6 year old car that's always parked outside. Nothing's broken, but check your tire pressures frequently if you have a wide range of temperatures in your winter. Also don't leave carbonated drinks in your car - I had a redbull can split and explode once somehow. Aside from that, make sure you have wiper fluid...?

fuel filters, especially on diesels. can and will clog up in cold weather causing engine to run lean * not enough fuel * or not start atall.
more common in diesel as it goes sludgy and thick when cold |

A lot depends on your definition of winter.
Over here in UK, they tend to be cold wet affairs mixed with heavy frosts and occaissional dustings of snow. This extra moisture in the air means electrics are more susceptible to issues, especially if seals not working as well or damaged casings. You will tend to notice lights not working more, heated windscreens etc, however a lot is down to greater use - more frequent on and off selections. |

Wiper motors burn out for those owners who use their wipers to remove snow on the windshield.

Or ice. Rookie mistake for a lot of people owning cars in winter for the first time.
