South Africa Delays! (4 Month Delay) UPDATE: 3/27/17

Placed my order last week and I got a production number and build sheet right away. I noticed it said 340i SA and after some investigation, this comes with some delays. There appears to be 2 boats the leave SA to the US, one which stops in Germany and the other comes straight here. So the flip of a coin could decide if my car takes an extra 2 weeks!

Today I come to find out that the Performance Center Delivery can not issue a date until after it has arrived at the VPC! This was confirmed by both PCD and my CA. Last year I was issued a tentative date before my car even went into production. That means that after my car lands on US soil, it will probably be a month before I take delivery.

On top of that I have no patience, I'm borrowing my brothers car. I almost want to say delivery to the dealer but I know PCD is worth the extra wait.

2/9 Order placed
2/10 Car moves to status 112 and scheduled for week 9
2/23 Car set for production completion date of 3/3
3/3 Car completed and released to carrier (Same exact build date as my last order)
3/7 At the port waiting for vessel
3/23 on a boat
4/14 dropped off at Germany
4/27 (ETA for next boat)
5/16 Arrival to Charleston Port
5/18 Arrival at VPC
5/28 Complete work order
6/1 arrive at performance center
6/1 pick up date confirmed
6/15 arrive in Greenville
6/16 PCD

My dealer actually had me wait until the next months allocations in order to get a Munich build. Waiting a couple of weeks for the allocation actually saved time in the long run.

My dealer gave me that same option but I don't think it works out for me in the long run. My allocation is set to go into production next week. If I wait until next month I have the possibility of getting an allocation that is towards the end of that month or possibly even a build week in April.

To me it seems I would either get them at the same time or possibly sooner doing the SA build, especially if it gets on the boat that comes straight to the SA. I try to see the extra wait as a positive, I get to see 3 months worth of lease rates to see which is the best. I believe last year March numbers were the highest ever.

Speaking of SA boats, does anyone know how to track them? Does BMW use the same ships for SA as they do Germany?

Nope. Mine was ship using Mitsui OSK Lines from SA...Luckily, it went straight to US. I think the boat that goes straight to US is the one in mid month shipping. 9/17/15 onto boat, arrives 10/9 in NJ.

Here's the fun part while me & another person tracking our cars from SA...have fun!!!

What port does it leave from? Was going to see what the schedules look like.

Mine is scheduled to finish towards the end of the month so it might get on the direct.

If you look at the schedule on my link...Durban (South Africa) see post #52 on the bimmerpost link. Then you are lucky to catch a mid month boat. I had to wait a whole month at port. You probably will get yours mid-April....spring weather for those MPSS sweet tires..

For some reason when I search SA to Charleston it shows SA to Hong Kong.

If I made it on a ship that leaves mid March, car would be in the US mid April, then another 2-3 weeks for PCD. So realistically looking at early May delivery...

Not to add insult to injury but my SA build had a voyage of 44 days on the vessel. Took nearly 8 weeks from order to delivery (NY/NJ) to get my car.

Anyone else have any info on how to track ship schedules? Been at port now since the beginning of March and still no update.

Ordered the car early Feb after a dealer told me he had a car going into production right away. Like a typical dealer, this wasn't true and it was a week 12 build. Thankfully it got pushed to a week 9 but I wasn't aware SA builds took this much longer. Very disappointed as dealer told me originally I would have the car by end of March which obviously is not true.

Wow 30-40 days at port. I looked up the schedule and it doesn't look good. I'm doing PCD and in the past the entry port was Charleston. I don't see that on the scheudle for any of the ships. I know some other people have had it come into Brunswick or Baltimore.

Assuming I'm using the following link correctly, the next ship to go to any of those 3 ports leaves on April 17th. That would mean I wouldn't take delivery until end of May... Crazy

Hopefully you can chime in and tell me I used the tracker wrong or maybe they use another shipping line for SA builds.

boats for SA cars cant be easily "guessed" by looking at ship schedules. there are multiple transports options/routes for SA cars. you need to talk to live person at 800 number. only when the operator tells you which exact boat you got on, can you really discover which transport company your car is on and track it

On the same boat as XRAVE . My 328 got to SA port on 3/7 and nothing since. The 800 updates haven't the slightest clue when the car may get on a boat.
Also expecting PCD, so I guess the wait may be longer than anticipated by my CA.

Wow we both live in Miami and our cars arrived at the port same day, we might be doing PCD at the same time too.

The good news is that the status update BMW is getting from when your car actually gets on a boat is about 1-2 weeks. Someone's status just changed to "in transit" yesterday but his boat left on the 7th. I noticed there are 2 possible boats that we could have made it on, one on the 18th and one on the 21st. Both arrive around Early-Mid April. We should know more next week.

What dealer are you getting your car through? South/Braman?

Didn't realize you were also in Miami. Braman in WPB. South had a decent deal, but Braman beat them to it. Hope we already got on that boat and we are just getting delayed updates.

Best of luck to us both.

So my buddy had the same issue of getting no updates beyond "at port" until I told him to ask genius for the VIN and run the car using that. (He was using the BMW order number) called again afternoon of same day and it showed already having left on a boat a couple days earlier. Could be a system lag but the VIN may have more detail attached to it... Just a thought might be coincidence
