Has anybody moved from an E9X 335i to an F30 328i?

I am considering this move because of the $1750 potential credit to a new car and the fact BMW dealerships keep bugging me about buying back my car. I'd obviously rather go for a 335i, but I want to keep my payments relatively low. I only wanted the M-sport package, lighting, manual transmission, and HK radio.

I work for BMW, and I would say you will not be dissapointed in the 328, especially in a manual. Dont know how equipped your E90 is but to make up for it, a well equipped 328 w/nav would be a car you would be very happy with.

i was about to make that same move...felt my f30 328i test drive wasnt too bad..good power for a 4 banger...until i drove the f30 335i matched with 8at sport...it was game over at that point.. although i love the 328i power, i cant stand not hearing the straight 6 growl. the 328i sounds a bit anemic and i drive with the windows down most of the time so it really got me there. at the end of the day, n55 still better to me..torque and all

Yeah I'm afraid if I test drive the 328i I might just get it because it's new and more practical than my coupe is right now. Now that I bought a place a few months ago, the F30 335i is kinda out of my price range... I'm not sure if the sound will bug me that much; most of my driving is highway early in the morning and around 7 PM at night.

I went from an E92 335 to a F30. Was set on a 328 until I drove the 335 and I just couldn't give it up. But I was extremely impressed with the 328!

I feel the same as you but I chose the 328 in the end for price reason.

You just need to drive both and decide. I'm coming from a e90 335 (n54). There are very mixed feelings on the forums regarding this transition. I think it depends how much you enjoy the very strong/wide torque band of the n55 vs the n20's slightly smaller and less powerful torque band vs all the other positive aspects of the car. The n20 mpg is great for it's performance. I was set on moving to the n20 until I drove them back to back. I enjoyed the n55 too much to pass it up. Others feel the N20 is plenty for them - it's a great engine. So bottom line - only you can really make this personal decision.

I would price and drive them both. When you option them, price may be closer than you think, especially if you're leasing. Can't go wrong either way though, that 4 banger is impressive,

If you need the car now, you should drive the 328 and not step foot in the 335 since you say its out of your price range currently. I drove both, and like others have said, the 328 is fantastic. You won't be tempted if you stay away from 335.

Or, if you can hold off on the car till you can save more cash, and/or buy a 1 or 2 yr old used F30, then maybe try driving both when they are both in price range.

Sounds like good advice. I don't really need a car right now, but I've stated my reasons at the beginning and it's really more about much value I can get from my car. It's got 75K miles on it and it's old.

The other alternative was to get a new beater car like the GTI and just save the dough until something like the next M3 comes out.

You are going to be happy with the response and acceleration of the car. Of course, not as happy as a 335, but its a good compromise of price/gas mileage. I do have a 335 e90 and I had a loaner f30 328i.

The most disappointing for me was the engine noise. If you are kinda guy that loves race car's spirit and specially engine's noise, you are going to have some adjusting to do in 328 f30.

I got a lousy trade-in value for my car so I guess if I got one, it wouldn't be anytime soon. thanks guys.

Sucks to hear, but you might want to consider moving off that E92 before they debut the F32 next year. Then used values will really drop!

I'm a fan of 335 no navigation instead of a geeked out 328. The leases are so close. I was pricing 328's everything on the lot is $45,000 or more (mostly more). Every car I found had navigation and apps. I even found a $55,000 328 at a dealer. Now an Xdrive 335 sedan starts at $44,800 plus destination charge and all you need is an enhanced Bluetooth and your tech is taken care of with an iPhone.

Say what you want about navigation and apps. The best option on the 3 series is the 60 more HP of the 335.

I was only looking at M-sport, manual, lighting package, and HK radio regardless of the model. Honestly I'd be happy if they offered the cloth or alcantara with a NA 2.0 haha

Yeah that's why I wanted to get rid of my car soon. The dealership offered to pay off the car and that's it haha... I'll take this as a lesson that aftermarket parts really don't mean crap to the dealers... even if they are BMW Performance ones

Yeah, accessories (even factory spec'd versions) seem to offer 0-10% of value when it comes to trade-in or resale value. Sure it's all about customizing your car, but if you're only going to keep it short term, expect 0% payback, unless you're going to part it out. If you keep it 5-10+ years, your mod costs are of course amortized while you enjoy them

I was debating this same move because I love the estoril blue m-sport. And the 328i seems like enough power for me seeing as I really don't use the power of the 335i. But seeing lease payments people are making here, i pay about the same or less for my finance e90 right now. i'll wait till they are used then probably buy it depreciated like i did this time.
